Question Buy Miles = Medallion® Miles, MQMs

Is this a good idea and what are the general thoughts?

A few miles short of that Award vacation you've been thinking about? Buying miles is the perfect way to make up the difference. For every 10,000 miles you buy, you'll enjoy 1,000 Medallion® Qualification Miles (MQMs) from the time you enroll through
August 31, 2009. Every year, you can buy up to 60,000 miles, and between June 25 and
August 31, 2009, you can earn up to 6,000 MQMs.

Earning more MQMs will bring you closer to Medallion status:

25,000 MQMs is equal to Silver Medallion status.
50,000 MQMs is equal to Gold Medallion status.
75,000 MQMs is equal to Platinum Medallion status.
With Medallion status, you'll enjoy the additional benefits of complimentary upgrades, preferred check-in, priority boarding and more. You're closer than you think. Register now, then buy miles at delta.com and earn up to 6,000 MQMs.

Tain't there right now... and from the Delta website....
---------
* You can purchase from 2,000 miles to 60,000 miles per calendar year in increments of 2,000.

* Purchased miles are applicable toward all SkyMiles awards.

* The cost is $0.028 USD per mile plus a 7.5% Federal Excise Tax. An additional 5% Goods and Services Tax (GST) applies to purchases by Canadian residents.

--- snip ----

Purchased miles do not count toward Medallion® or Million Miler status. "

It can't possibly be targeted because registration worked for me. Will anyone NOT be PM in 2010?

A ripoff.

buy 10,000 Skymiles --> get 1000 MQMs

at .028 cpm + 7.5% excise tax per mile, $300 gets you a cool 1000 MQMs. Cheaper just do take a quick roundtrip somewhere, if the MQMs are what you're looking for.

It is crazy First it was Amex and their 10,000MQM, then PM moved from 100,000 to 75,000... and then it went down hill...

Clarification: "rocks" means the registration did not work (Charlie Brown Halloween reference). So if you "got rocks!" you should not be happy. It would mean it was NOT working for you. Perhaps is the ASL thing that is causing the communication gap. For more "I got a rock" go here.

General reply:

Also, at $1806 for 60K SkyMiles one would get 6K MQMs. Of course we could easily find a MR for less $ that would get one 6K MQMs but it would require doing the actual travel (and the misc ancillary expenses that most would incur). On top of that show me a MR (sans limited-time promos) that would get one 6K MQMs AND 60K SkyMiles.... I'm serious... show me one. I want to know.

Again, will anyone NOT be PM in 2010?

Considering that we're both PMs, it's not that hard.

I could do MSP-ATL-SVO-ATL-MSP for $550 all-in, which is 12,572 MQMs, and 25144 RDMs. Multiply all by 3, and I'm at $1650 all-in, plus 37716 MQMs plus 75,432 RDMs. Not only do I save $156 (before considering other expenses), but I get over 31,000 MQMs more and 15,432 more RDMs.

I'd never buy 60k/6000 MQMs, but if I were very close to the next status level and couldn't travel, I'd consider buying 10k/1000 MQMs or 20k/2000 MQMs. That being said, I'd hold out until the end of August for possible better promos and/or additional travel before making such a costly purchase of miles.
