175s are the peak of seat width comfort. The decline has started with the Boeing 787, which will have 9 across in coach in a plane that is 16 inches more narrow than the 777 that has 9 across.

Um, the 787 was designed for 8 across and many airlines will operate it in that configuration. Also, there are plenty of airlines that operate the 777 with 10 across.

Thats what I thought. Are the NW ordered planes 8 or 9 across?

Initially the 787 was targeted for 8 across, then Boeing made changes so 9 seats across could be squeezed in.

A few airlines will be going with 8 across, and every year we see more 777s with 10 across in coach. The linked 2006 articles states: "Two-thirds of 787 buyers have decided to fit nine seats in each row in economy, executives from the Chicago-based manufacturer said."

I would like to see the latest reports on who is going with 9 across. I think NW was aiming at 8 across, but will DL have it delivered with 9 across?

The 175 has no middle seats, and the 9 across has 3 a row.

Well get used to seeing a lot of me on these runs :)

Don't worry - I'm not one of those bitter old guys who just frowns and watches you struggle with stuff. I actually HELP, smile, and have fun!

We can count our blessings that it is the E75 and not the CRJ900! At least the E70/75 have usable overhead bin space. My briefcase barely fits into the bin on the CRJ900 which has to be almost the same size as the CRJ100/200 bin...

Am I the only one that can't stand the E70/75's? The seats may be wider, but I find they are horribly uncomfortable after about 30 minutes. My a** goes numb in those things faster than just about any plane I have ever flown on.

No you are not alone.:) I think they su-ck too. A slightly better regional jet, but a regional jet nonetheless. Slightly better bin space, but not like a mainline jet.

Tolerable for an hour flight or so, avoid these aircraft like the plaque for longer stage flights.

My only two trips on them have been CMH-SLC and DEN-CMH. Miserable.

I flew on one BWI to MSP recently, likewise, miserable. The airlines love 'em because the pilots aren't paid as much as mainline and they are good on fuel.

Unfortunately I don't think they are going away anytime soon. :(

The longest flight have I have been on one is IND-SLC and I much preferred it to anything else they fly domestically from a seat standpoint.

I am getting frightened that lately I have been agreeing so much with indufan. We get them all the time from LGA to CVG and ORD and also ATL-SDF and we find them to be very comfortable.

I know that most of their crews are IND based seniors and will keep my eye out for IndyWA. We lose nothing service-wise when we compare these FAs to the DL mainline or Shuttle in-flight crews. That is, when they are able to finish needing to sort out the open seating boarding which, I predict, will not last very long at all.

Pretty scary, isn't it? :)

Admittedly off topic, but since others were discussing small ax concerns...

::Start rant:: DL will operate CRJ900's (well, SkyWest will operate) from SLC-MSY-SLC starting in the winter. They did this in the past some too, but I've only taken the MD90's. This is a real turn off, especially since I found SLC to be a great connection hub. Back to ATL for any west coast runs for me ::End Rant::

The CR9, while no E70 or E75, is descent as long as you are in the front. So far, I have been upgraded 100% of the time on them.

NOLA7460 Nov 18, 2008 11:17 pm

I don't have a problem with the CR9, per se. It was fine for a recent SLC-SEA trip. But it wouldn't be fine for 3 1/2 hours.
