I don’t understand the pricing either. I booked a 787 United Polaris EWR-LAX for 1/3 what Delta was charging and that was 6 weeks before the flight. I just looked at another round trip in the first week of June and again Delta was 2.5x the cost of United. Seems crazy to me but obviously people are paying it.

As seen in post above, DL doesn't really start releasing cheaper Z inventory on these flights until they are less than 6 weeks out -- https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/37633092-post8.html
If you have some flexibility and are booking closer in, you can find examples of flights that are more modestly priced. I doubt there are all that many people purchasing business fares on these routes 6 weeks out or more as business flyers tend to purchase tickets closer in.

It’s for this reason I thought booking in advance saved money. Good to know. But even so, now that this trip and another one are getting close to departure all Delta flights are close to 2x what United charges. No arguments D1 is a little nicer.

Not sure if you intended to write "dorm-style" or meant "domestic-style", but either way, that is definitely an experience best avoided. :)

For all its faults, at least with DL you know the worst thing you'll end up with is the 763.

Haha it is referred to colloquially as dorm-style in some places, and it is awful for sure.

I agree completely. Seems like one of those products that sounds nice conceptually and in reality isn’t really comfortable at all. The herringbone config is a huge drawback. United seems to be going down this path too.

I’m hoping delta doesn’t give up on reverse herringbone for the premium 321neos, even with the Safran Vue certification delays.

Flew D1 on a 763 for the first time in years LAX-JFK last night, and man did I forget how bad these seats are. I knew what I was getting in to, but it was the best option for my schedule so I didn't have much of a choice. It's absolutely wild that DL charges as much as they do for these awful seats. The lack of storage and how "exposed" the seat feels stood out the most. Can't believe there was a time when this cabin was actually a competitive product.

Delta JFK - LAX prices are usually always higher than AA, Jetblue, etc.. usually have to find some odd timing constraints or approvals to book - but havent been shutout in some time due to a great boss.

United is adding Polaris Lounge access to Coastliner flights starting this summer I believe. Will be good overall for the market!

Competition is always good (for us) and it will be good to have UA come back to JFK next year. I still think DL has the best overall product on this route, but I just flew UA EWR-LAX (on a widebody, Polaris equipped aircraft) and found the inflight soft and hard product pretty comparable to D1. The ground handling and lounge is a completely different story, of course.
