Long story short, I think Delta thinks they have the best experience on the route, and when it's a Boeing 767-400 or Airbus A330-900neo it truly is the best by lightyears. I think these prices are here to stay, and I think people are paying them.

But most are not those aircraft. Most are 20+ year old 767s with a coffin product with new upholstery that Delta calls "refurbished". The UA 787 in Polaris is superior to every single product on this route EXCEPT the odd A330-900 that is sometimes thrown in there. Ive been flying this route for 20 years and unless its an A330 Im going to EWR to avoid that crap for the amount DL charges.
Looking at March 31st (i just had to book for that Tuesday so I'll use it as the example): United is operating 10 nonstops that day with 1 x 789 with Polaris, 1 x 777 with Polaris, 2 x 777s with dorm style business class, 6 x 757-200. Delta also operating 10 nonstops that day with 1 x A330-900neo, 2 x 767-400, 2 x A330-200, 1 x A330-300, 4 x 767-300ER. I realize it depends on the day, but in my opinion, despite the 763 D1 seats not being good, Delta still had a way better fleet mix on the route than United. |
OP here. I feel like I'm cheating on DL but I booked B6 at half the price. The lounge isn't a huge deal for me, hard product is probably most important in my book.

There are times during the past year I've regularly seen up to 5-6 daily on 339s and 764s with the rest on 763s, which i agree aren't great. Right now it's heavy on 763s and 332/333s, but in a few weeks more 339s and 764s rotate onto the route. UA's Polaris is pretty equivalent to the 764 Delta One seats in my opinion.

For the record I hate UA and EWR, but there is no way in he*l ill pay DL for their 767. |

March 31st sounds like a wonderful day to support your argument and choose DL, but we can all find exceptions. Look at August 6-10th. Not one single aircraft the entire week other than Delta 767s. FYI usually UA has two 787s a day.

I still find the 76Ks better than J on AA’s A321Ts and UA’s 752s, which do run the vast majority of their flights on this route. (I actually really liked J on AA’s new XLR, but for the time being deliveries are delayed and they still only have two- one is now doing transatl runs so there’s only one in rotation on JFK-LAX now.) |
Got ton of Virgin miles, wish I can use 'em to book this route.

Love the D1 lounge, but I’m mostly about hard product.
is Jet Blue Mint the best hard product? is Delta’s 767 the worst hard product? I usually go AA J, traveling with my wife so not all aisle access is not a problem (she’s nimble). |

Delta’s 763 product is not great but fine (and I just spent 10 hours on it last night from HNL so this is fresh for me). The 764 product, in my opinion, is excellent though. Worst product on the route, if you include Newark, is still United’s dorm-style 777s which are 2-4-2, eight business class seats per row, and United’s 757-200 (although not a big deal since you’re flying with your wife). |

I note that you will occasionally find AA wide-bodies (777/787) on this route. Each is configured 1-2-1 in Business.
For the time being there just isn’t a lot of consistency with equipment/seats on premium transcon- but this should improve over the next 1-2 years as AA takes on more XLRs, UA takes their premium A321neo “Coastliners”, and hopefully we will see the retirement of the UA domestic 772s. |

For all its faults, at least with DL you know the worst thing you'll end up with is the 763. |

I don’t understand the pricing either. I booked a 787 United Polaris EWR-LAX for 1/3 what Delta was charging and that was 6 weeks before the flight. I just looked at another round trip in the first week of June and again Delta was 2.5x the cost of United. Seems crazy to me but obviously people are paying it.
