MSP checkpoints

New to flying out of MSP term 1
Which checkpoint usually faster ?
Clear or SKy priority?

I do not have tsa precheck

BusinessElite25 Sep 16, 2025 3:14 pm

probably sky priority.
on the south side, they just re arranged the CLEAR so that it only goes to precheck, not actually sure if you can use it without precheck, also not sure about the north side.
if you are so inclined, you can do the MSP reserve service to reserve your time slot, that would be the "quickest"

I've found Clear at MSP to be significantly slower than regular PreCheck. Like, so much slower. I don't think either checkpoint is noticeably slower or faster as a rule. Usually I refer to the giant boards that estimate how long the wait time is and then go by that + where my gate is or which SkyClub I'm heading to. Generally I find PreCheck at MSP to be reliably no more than 5-10 minutes, and often much less.

The fastest is almost always the North check-point. It is also where the non-precheck CLEAR is.

at this point clear is a huge loser, even at airports where it might make a difference they seem to be understaffed, I doubt anyone saves on average more than 2-3 minutes per trip and honestly I think it might be a negative for a significant number of people.

though, for people without precheck, it probably is a net positive

I don't understand the value proposition for Clear even though I believe I could get it for free. I have pre-check through global entry.

SFO only airport that clear has adequate staffing

it used to be hit or miss, but when i went through last week in South it was actually faster. they moved the machines to the short side of the line, so it's closer walk from the main hall and then to the officer, whereas the regular line snakes farther around where the clear line used to be, and also one agent seemed dedicated to the CLEAR side, at least at the time I passed through (but probably he was alternating like usual)

you're paying to trade 3 minutes of staring at your phone in line before security for 3 minutes of staring at your phone at the gate/club.

WillBarrett_68 Sep 17, 2025 4:16 am

also I guess there is a group of people who can't stand the thought of someone else having a perk they don't have, so they'll pay

Its certainly true that Clear at BOS is no faster than Pre, and often slower especially if there is any sort of backup at the metal detectors/x-ray belts. Clear at BOS is at the 'end' of the queue x-ray line after the TSA agent, so you have 4 people moving ahead from precheck for every 1 from clear.

I work with travelers assistance at msp and help people check in and go through security. North versus south is time dependent, with no clear winner. Non-Delta international flights significantly slow north in the early evening. Same goes for which security line on either side. Very time/day dependent

Just go to the T1 departures level, and as you face the ticket counters, look left to view the 2 story tall TSA Checkpoint wait time display for South checkpoint, and look to the right to view the 2 story tall TSA Checkpoint wait time display for North checkpoint, and choose accordingly.

However, I've always assumed that the posted wait times were for the regular security line, not SkyPriority, CLEAR, or PreCheck.
