Flexible Origin Flight Search
Hey There! Hoping you can help with something.
I'm looking to make my first trip to Tokyo in the spring. Problem is, flights from MSP -> HND are bonkers expensive. We're willing to leave a day early and reposition, but was wondering if there's a tool that helps find options to do so.
Dates: May 8-25th (can reposition afternoon of May 7)
Leaving from MSP, but will reposition anywhere it makes sense.
Arriving in Japan (almost certainly HND)
If this isn't the right thread for this -- apologies.

Think competitive gateway cities like Chicago, Seattle, and Los Angeles (you can plug multiple origins into Google Flights). LAX-HND is available from $1139 in BE and $1339 in Main on non-stop on your dates (there are cheaper dates, but you'd have to adjust departure/return).

SAN fares are somewhat cheaper, but involves a risky 46min connection in SEA.

Fares out of STL also look to be pretty cheap and might make the most sense from MSP.

STL probably still wins on that as well. I can't really say it's worth the upcharge (unless you can apply an MUA to D1), but it's probably going to be about the cheapest. Looks like CLE-HND is about $74 cheaper for your dates. You can route return through MSP and skip last leg to CLE (hidden-city ticketing), but there are some risks there (they can route you via another airport in the case of IRROPs).
