Lap Infants Internationally
So here's an odd question. My wife and I had planned to pay for a booking between the US and Denmark this summer, with our 6 month old travelling as a lap infant. We were prepared to pay 10% of the fare as his lap infant price, BUT the Delta agent just told my wife that even children between 0-2 need to buy full tickets, whether they use a separate seat or not. I couldn't believe this so I looked on the delta website, and it states in relevant part that an "infant in arms" on an international flight costs 10%, but that "YOU WILL NEED TO PURCHASE A TICKET FOR YOUR CHILD IF YOU: Will be traveling between countries, regardless of whether or not the child occupies a seat."
What type of international travel doesn't involve travelling between countries? Is there some sort of terminology either the agent or I am misunderstanding here? https://www.delta.com/us/en/children.../infant-travel |
Just go ahead and book it, being certain to specify lap infant. Delta.com won't let you do it (!!!) but Expedia and other OTAs will, and surely a Delta reservation agent will also, presuming you can get one to answer the phone.

Ha, thank you! I was actually running a travelocity mockup even as you replied and was thrilled to see it was possible there. So weird that Delta doesn't let you enter it online themselves, I know AA does as we were looking into a flight with them as well.

Every lap infant needs a ticket for international (Canada etc. might be an exception) travel, but the lap infant ticket costs 10% of the fare plus 100% of the fees. If you don't buy it at the same time as you purchase your ticket(s), the price could go up.

That makes sense, so basically they are just distinguishing between a ticket (required internationally, albeit at 10% of full fare for a lap infant) and a seat (which would cost full fare but not required below 2 years). I guess I just always assumed even a free lap infant flying domestically would still be "ticketed" for $0. Still doesn't help that the website seems unable to accommodate that mechanic.

Domestically they get a ticket, but it is $0 as you state. It's done in the background. You can do domestic lap infants at checkin (even on the kiosk, itll ask).

Works even on award ticket
I had even taken my 1 year old from ATL - BOM (via AMS) on an award ticket 4 years ago in J as a lap infant. My wife and I had sky peso award tickets and I just had to paid 10% of the cheapest business fare that was available then for my 1 year old (came to about $600). So you definitely do not need to pay a full fare ticket for your infant! Whoever you talked to at DL has zero clue.

As I understand it they are not even ticketed. Looking at a few past reservations, there is no ticket # for my son when he was under 2.

We are traveling to Greece with lap infant (1 year old) in D1 on A333 in another week. A couple questions that I have:
1) Is it better to select seats A & C or C & G combo seats for the parents? I'm thinking about ease of sharing responsibilities with child 2) For TATL flights, is DL providing standard blankets and pillows or not? 3) Is there any modified meal service? Do lap infants qualify for any meals? Or is it for only the adult tickets? 4) Are there additional restrictions with ability to walk up and down aisles if/when our child has a meltdown? Sorry to hijack thread, OP. |

I realized that as of Nov 12, 2020, DL is no longer offering special infant or toddler meals. For some reason, there isn't a way to pre-select adult meals either in my trip profile. They only allow for special selection (dietary restrictions). Is this other people's experience in D1? |
I just called in to add a lap infant to a US->Europe award ticket in Premium Select. The agent insisted there is no charge for this. The infant even has a ticket number, but the receipt shows $0.00. I pressed saying I usually have to pay for this and she insisted that everything was all set and we will have no problem flying. This does not seem right to me. Does anyone have recent experience with this?
I really don't feel like having to call again and waste my time fixing their mistake, but I also don't want to get stuck at the counter as a family of five sorting this out on departure day. |

On awards i don't believe they normally charge for infants. Theres no $ amount for them to calculate 10% of for them. |
