I just want to know what this "Limited Edition" tag looks like?
Is is fun enough to justify the cost of ticking off higher status pax who might think they lost an upgrade? As a lowly GM, I lean towards WFBF whenever possible, so...since I've never been sent a tag ever in 4+ years, this could be fun and the drink tickets for the occassional flight I'm in exit row (I prefer that to the often risky C+) give me something I'm most likely using anyway. |
Delta is cannibalizing their co-brand credit cards with this offer, particularly the AmEx Gold Card. I have an AmEx Delta Gold card. I don't spend on it, but keep it for, well, the subtle perks like Main1 boarding. I received an email this morning for SkyMiles Select. I might just very well cancel my AmEx Delta Gold card at renewal, and buy Delta's SkyMiles Select at a fraction of the price.

You must not check bags.

I guess I understand why people wouldn't want (or could be approved) for a credit card, but $59 for some drinks versus $99 for a free first checked bag is huge. And if you pay this $59/yr do you get Main1 even if flying Basic Economy?
* On many of my flights overhead bin space is long gone by the time Group 1 finishes boarding, so this does not provide any guarantee. |

They claim to give them out to FO and GM. I requalified FO in Feb and GM in June and haven't seen them yet. Of course, they also claim it's new but really it's just undoing an enhancement from a few years back.
They don't send out the brag tags if you re-qualify for the same status until the start of the new year. If you have qualified with that status for the first time, they typically send them out a few weeks after you achieve your status mark.

Yeah when I hit FO for the first time earlier this year I got one also. I think they're only sending them out to first time FOs and GMs.

If this proves popular, we might start seeing some flights that run of overhead space in the middle of Main Cabin 1 boarding!
What's DL's goal here? Is it to attract passengers who fly multiple times per year, but not enough for to attain status to get some set of perks to try to get their business loyalty? Or I wonder if this is a test run before making FO status harder to achieve (some discussion about that has been going on in the UA changes thread)...it sort of provides a soft landing for folks who would no longer qualify for FO, or a informal half-status in between FO and general member. |

This is more for that low budget family who got denied by AMEX.
Most people don't think about CCs the way FTers do. Most people don't calculate out benefits and add/remove cards like this. Most people will decide whether or not to buy SM Select based on a 5-second arbitrary value assessment and their emotion or gut feel about the offer. |
It doesn't impact me but this kind of thing makes Delta resemble Spirit more and more every week.

I was thinking of doing it as I could give the drink vouchers away as gifts to people I know who think they travel a lot. Someone did the math earlier and it's basically paying $1.40 for another luggage tag. Maybe I will, maybe I won't. I have cut back on my travel significantly, but when I do travel it will likely be on Delta.

Charge for bags so everyone tries to bring as much as they can into the cabin. When overhead space inevitably fills up, start charging to board earlier. Genius!

With different numbers, isn't that just what MQDs are? Or are you saying require a straight-up purchase after meeting the flight/spend requirements?
I could more realistically see airlines just going to a pure spend model. Spend $30k MQDs and get DM - doesn't matter how many MQM/MQS you have. That would match UA and has been how Hilton has worked for years (Hyatt as well, though I'm not sure if for the same amount of time). |
