Delta uncontained engine failure

One of my friends was on an ATL-MCO flight last where the engine had an uncontained failure and caught fire. Everyone’s lucky the parts didn’t fly into the fuselage like what happened with the SWA flight recently where the woman died! In this case thankfully the pilots were able to shut down the engine and they landed safely back at ATL. The news is just starting to talk about it:

That's unfortunate - glad there wasn't another freak incident like SWA. Looks like I flew this ship back from LAS a couple of weeks ago in 20F so I wouldn't have been in a good spot!

Doesn't seem like "uncontained" failure

Why? That’s what the NTSB called it and what my friend was told during the flight. Your flight path graphics don’t show either way whether it was a contained or uncontained failure. Also, passengers did see flames.

Flames wouldn't necessarily imply an uncontained failure. But it does seem the news articles are very clear about it being uncontained. Of course we can wait for the real NTSB preliminary report to find the truth.

containment relates to jet engine containment casings

If anything breaks out of that, it is uncontained.

"Engine looked normal" doesn't sound like uncontained. Initial accounts are often updated as more information becomes available.

The fact there is no video tells me it was probably was contained since it probably wasn't all that interesting to look at.

It was either contained or it wasn't. Had to be one or the other, not both.

One of you is wrong.

Aviation Herald has it as "uncontained engine failure".

Incident: Delta B752 at Atlanta on Sep 5th 2018, uncontained engine failure

The NTSB is now involved in the investigation.

Short of some pics it's hard to determine whether it's contained or uncontained.

But the bottom line is the plane made it back to ATL safely and no one was injured. Engine failures do happen...

So how does one retroactively figure out if they've flown on this plane??
