Wifi Calling While in Flight (GoGO)

Is it possible to take wifi calls via GoGo on flights? I don't intend on doing any talking and I'll have earphones in, but would just like to listen into a few conference calls. Is this possible (asking before I confirm call schedules)?

No, it's prohibited by Delta's rules. (And other passengers might create a scene if you even appear to be on a call, too, even if you're just listening in.)

There was a good discussion about this last week: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/delt...ough-wifi.html

Its against policy thats fine, but lets be honest then everybody with ear buds or headphones on during a flight "might be on a call too" how would you know if you say NOTHING on the call?

This. I listen in to calls all the time (with varying degrees of success.. GoGo isn't the most reliable and connectivity usually drops at least a few times during every flight). As long as you aren't talking, no one would know you are on a call (without looking over your shoulder on your phone at least).

It's definitely possible. If you're on the older wifi it might be a bit choppy or completely drop for periods. if reliability is important, reschedule.

It really depends on the plane / type of link you have to the internet. Gogo ATG will be pretty much unworkable in my experience, even to do voice-only at low quality. The jitter and packet loss will make it really difficult to follow along on any conversation, and you'll drop all the time.

The 2Ku/Ku might fare better - in my experience, it has higher latency, but much less jitter and significantly better packet loss. This would result in a bad experience if you were trying to take part in a conversation, but shouldn't be bad if you're trying to listen.

I will couch this by saying that I've been on plenty of flights, 2Ku, Ku and ATG where it's been completely broken. If these are important meetings, I would skip this and schedule them when you're on the ground.

My Pixel automatically switches to wifi calling when I am in airplane mode. I learned this after I was startled when my phone rang while connected to Gogo in flight. I didn't answer so I cant speak to the call quality but, it did ring in.

There's a reason they refer to it as "NoGo".

I’ve listened to a couple calls on 2KU Gogo. It drops out occasionally, but works fine. Just don’t say anything.

haven't had problems since 2Ku became standard. Plus like fact it works gate to gate. Can surf the web while taxing to takeoff.

I've listened in on the 2ku internet before, but I didn't realize it was against the rules (which were probably designed not to have people making the plane a Sky Club with important people closing deals at volume 10).

Im against people talking on the phone while on the plane, but have no problem listening in on a call. Ive done that before, its not disrupting anyone and is no different then quietly listening to music or watching the IFE

I called into a meeting an hour or so ago and put my phone on mute. Got decent audio. Wasn't great but I could follow along.

db729 Apr 12, 2018 11:56 am

Reporting back, was able to dial into a call (and was on mute the whole time) on 2ku wifi with pretty decent results. I'd get dropped occasionally but the voice quality was pretty good otherwise.

Facebook voice chat works too.
