Some people do have a paradoxical reaction to Benadryl, and apparently his kids were in that group.

Yes! My preschooler had the same reaction to Benedryl (taken for an allergic reaction.) She talked for 6 hours non stop. The doctor said it hits some people that way and often seemed to be with kids who had nicknames that inferred they were the active types. Her nickname was Monkey, as in Monkey see, monkey do.
I like young kids on flights. They are excited and happy (usually) and have a different spin on what they see around them. |

Granted, this was 20+ years ago, so maybe its different now. Benadryl is just the brand name for Diphenhydramine HCl, a drug that usually makes most people drowsy. It's the only drug in Benadryl, unless you buy one that has a decongestant added. If you were buying a non-drowsy allergy med, I think you were buying something else. There are non-drowsy allergy meds, but not Benadryl. |
Update: We got upgraded on both inbound and outbound. Baby was a hit and put a smile on everyones face. No screaming, no ear pain (thankfully) All is well in the world.
|
Wow! It sounds as if you're going to be the envy of a lot of other people on the forums, what with your PBI upgrade.
(And my 2 cents on the baby thing: I'll take an infant any day over a squalling, squirming toddler, say, from 2 to 4.) |
I usually don't like being around kids, but there was one baby and three toddlers up front from MCO - SLC and not one of them even made a peep the whole flight. If they're screaming, then I've always got the head phones. My problem is with the seat kickers.

usually only if they have a ear infection - we took a few hundred flights with our kids starting at 2 mo old age without ever having this problem..
Using a pacifier or a bottle helps (the latter is rumored to work in adults too ;)) |

Hi folks,
As a new PM, I'm really excited about the free First Class upgrades. I'll be flying to PBI soon with the wife and baby. The baby will be a lap child. Are there are rules regarding babies in First? For example, if we get upgraded, would there be any issue if our little dude wis with us? Thanks! - If you upgrade to international J via a GUC, you need to pay taxes/fees for the difference between your original fare and the J fare for the lap child. This is generally 10% of the difference between J and your original fare. If you are clearing at the gate, beware that GAs are generally not well-versed in this process, and the length of time it takes may in some instances preclude the upgrade altogether. - Car seats are not allowed in D1 (this is a Delta rule as opposed to a TSA regulation). So once your child is over 2 y/o (and hence no longer a lap child), D1 gets to be somewhere between tricky and impossible until your child is capable of sitting alone without a car seat. |
My LO flew from nine weeks old on. I was Platinum until Delta departed our fair city, and we got upgraded so frequently that once she started talking, she would cry for her bottle of "'sani water" if we were relegated to Coach. :)

you really don't have to worry about it, you won't get upgraded as a PM.
When daughter was little, we'd give her Benadryl, but would often not time it correctly and she would fall asleep at the end of the flight, leaving us with dead weight to carry off the plane. Oops. Once they start using screens, well, not a peep. |

Back when Benadryl included the magic sleepy ingredient, he would get a bit of it in every take-off bottle. Slept throughout all the flights. People would walk by the row, stop and say "Oh I didn't even know there was a baby on board". When he got to the "kick the back of the seat stage", the first time he tried it... I told him that nobody likes it and to keep his feet off the seat. I also asked the person in the seat behind him to kick kid's seat, so kid would know what it feels like. The guy behind his seat had a great time kicking away for about 20 minutes! My kid never kicked anybody's seatback again (at least while I was with him :) )

Good luck getting upgraded out of PBI... not the easiest airport to get upgraded out of.
