Fuel surcharge on DL metal now on US departures

Per OMAAT, DL has started levying carrier fees on DL metal awards originating in the US. Maybe this is why they had some credit card promotions recently. Sigh.

So others don't have to search, here is the One Mile At a Time story:

On The Points Guy too. Seems like they might be having trouble rolling it out.

Doesn't make sense with low fuel costs right now.

It doesn't make a lot of sense. This DTW-CDG search has three options, one DL non-stop, one AF non-stop, and one DL connection via AMS. Only the DL non-stop has the fee.

This fee appears to be tied to the former LOW / SAVER level award space on DL metal only.

Looks to be country specific. Not seeing it on non-stop's to Britain, Ireland, Belgium, Germany, etc., nor to Asia. Seeing it on flights to/through partner countries (France, Netherlands, Italy), although it is inconsistent. Perhaps related to FlyingBlue changes? Awards involving SU flights have long had carried-imposed charges (including ex-US).

My suspicion as well. This might have been a trial run.

Hi everyone, wanted let you know that the surcharge that you saw for certain Europe Award Tickets earlier today was an error. Not to worry, as we took notice and the issue has been resolved. Happy Friday!

I'll pay the $173 surcharge and travel in C+ (confirmed seat, I get to pick it in advance), rather than the $289 R/T in WoW (plus fees for everything almost including "air to breathe")
