Delta Platinum AmEx MQM Bonus in December

I'm about to hit the $50,000 MQM bonus for an additional 10,000MQMs. I will exceed the threshold in December. I am concerned that the 10,000MQMs won't post to my account until January 2018 - which will therefor apply to my Delta status in 2018. Will Delta apply the MQMs retroactively to my 2017 status? I am in need of them to achieve Diamond.

Well , it will apply to your Delta status for 2018. It will be applied to your account for 2017 , because that is when it was earned.

lawi227 Nov 6, 2017 12:52 pm

You're saying the MQMs will apply to my cumulative total MQMs I have accrued in 2017, correct? Hypothetically, if I currently have 115,000 MQMs, and I get exceed my $50,000 spend before my statement closes in December, those 10,000 MQMs will be retroactively added to my Skymiles account for 2017, which will get me the 125,000 MQMs I need in a year to achieve Diamond?

Yes, they will be retroactively added to your 2017 MQM total (they will be dated as December 31, 2017) and your 2018 status will be updated to Diamond. They will also retroactively update your MQM rollover balance for 2018 if it has already posted.

TheMadBrewer Nov 6, 2017 12:57 pm

If your statement closes in December you should be fine. I find the MQM bonuses take a day or so to post. Allowing for late postings is one reason they give why rollover MQMs don't post Jan 1.

SuperG1955 Nov 6, 2017 2:03 pm

When the statement that contains your QUALIFIED 2017 spend that puts you over the $50K mark closes, even if it closes in January, the 10K MQM Bonus for will post for 2017 and will count for your 2018 Status.

indufan Nov 6, 2017 2:11 pm

This is one of the reasons for the period between the end of the year and status dropping. Used to be longer, now one month.

yohanson Nov 6, 2017 4:44 pm

I hit $30K spending in the middle of December last year on my Reserve card. The MQMs were added to my rollover in January.

NOLAnwGOLD Nov 7, 2017 12:47 am

I wouldn't cut it too close....

curl Nov 7, 2017 11:39 am

MIne have always posted within a few days of hitting the threshold... be careful with credits and such things though. Doesn’t matter when the cycle closes.

The annual spend MQM Boosts post a day or two after statement close (not after hitting the spend threshold). Been that way for many years. For the Reserve Card, the 15K RDM post at statement close, the MQM boost must be selected (or will automatically post after 90 days).

it is retro to the date you hit the spend. I’ve hit mine on 12/30 and it counted for that year.

zeebanker Dec 20, 2017 1:02 pm

In a similar situation myself. I remember an agent telling me to go to this site to claim the mqms for myself (or gift them): http://delta.com/deltareservemqm

Eddie98 Dec 20, 2017 1:47 pm

In my case, my statement closing date was 12/18 and have not seen any RDM and still can't claim my bonus MQM. Amex must be running late :)

curl Dec 20, 2017 8:11 pm

Hubby is waiting for his MQM bonus to kick in too. Amex closed on 12/19. unfortunately, I think he’s going to miss the GM upgrade window for his flight. Mine posted really quickly last month!

I hit the threshold $60k spent in November...statement closed and I received bonus miles on the 18th of December but no MQMs. I called and was given worthless info, clicked the link above, logged in, claimed them for myself and they were in my account immediately.

Thanks!

Yep, nothing new here. Its always been (at least for the last several years) if you have the Amex Delta Reserve card, you MUST claim them if you want them ASAP, else they will Automatic go to you, but after 90 days. This is because with Reserve card, you have the option of Gifting them to someone else.

Yeah it makes total sense. It's very odd though that the 3 people at amex and 3 people at Delta that I spoke with didn't know to direct me to log into Delta and accept them.

They will post a day or two after your statement close in January. If you have a Reserve card, you will get to select/gift them at that point. In either case, they will be backdated to Dec 31, 2017 and count towards 2017 MQM totals.

Have DL Amex Reserve and would like to do a charge shortly after midnight EST tonight. Will that charge count to 2017 spend or 2018 spend if charge is theoretically 12:01am Jan 1, 2018 in my time zone? Thanks

I was wondering the same, and in general is it the date it is charged or it posts?

I would assume it depends on the merchant.

Thank you fo this info. Just reviewing my account, I did not get my 15k MQMs from my Reserve AMEX. Just claimed them

The transaction date would probably depend on the merchant, but Amex does not use transaction date to determine which year a purchase counts toward. Amex uses the post date which would be based on it's own clock and which would be based in one of the US timezones. Transactions can often take a day or two (or even several days) to post. A number of people have been burned by this when making last minute year end purchases to hit an MQM Boost spend threshold and assuming that Amex uses the transaction date to determine which year a purchase counts toward.

I have 41,200 MQM for 2017. Hit my spending mark on about December 29. My next statement closes January 25. Once the MQM post I will reach Gold. Sounds like I will be stuck at Silver until January 25 when the next statement closes? Probably not traveling Delta before then, so it probably is irrelevant, but is there any precedent for Delta/AMEX posting the MQM early? Interestingly, they do show me hitting the spend threshold (for the waiver) which includes the spending on 12/29.

I have not heard of any cases of Amex pushing the MQM Boost through prior to statement close. You will likely just have to wait until then to become Gold for 2018.

Edit:
MQM is now backdated to 12/31/2017 as per usual. No news here.

Original post below:

DP here:
usually mile boost in Jan (for purchases done in 2017) is retroactively posted on 12/31 of prior year, however my statement just closed 1/3 and the miles/mqm are posted as 1/4 instead of 12/31. Don't know if it will updated later on but just want to let others know

Are you sure you are looking at the bonus MQM's (and not the bonus RDM's)? It's only the bonus MQM's that get backdated, not the bonus RDM's. They get posted separately and there may be other activities between them. Do both the activity date and posted on date say 1/4? It's the activity date that matters, not the "posted on" date. My January close MQM's boosts have always had different activity dates and posted on dates with the activity date always being backdated to 12/31 of the previous year while the "posted on" date just reflects the date they posted to the account. The MQM's are not instantaneously added to your balance for the previous year. They run regular "sweeps" every few days and they get added at that point.

Help. I have a friend with the Delta Platinum card. She hit the 25k spend and her statement ended 12/22/17. Her 10k mqm bonus still haven't posted 1/5/18 and her 2018 status with DAL shows her as a sky miles member. She needs the mqm bonus to make FO. Should she wait another week and see if it post or contact AmEx?

Did she actually hit the $25K spend before the statement close? Have her open the Statements & Activity link and then go to "Billing Statements & Documents" and open the PDF billing statement for 12/22 and check the "Miles Earned" section. There will be a sentence that says "Your Year-to-Date spend on your Delta Platinum account is $xx,xxx.xx"

So I just did this and "took" the MQMs for myself. They sort of back posted but don't actually show up as MQMs in my "Prior Year" Skymiles activity.

I'm assuming this will correct itself before the rollover date, but I am mentioning it to people who might freak out when the MQMs seem to go nowhere.

As noted above, they do regular "sweeps" to update your 2017 MQM totals rather than updating it instantaneously. I don't recall the exact frequency, but I don't think it was done daily in the past. Even if it happens after MQM rollover, the sweep will update both status and MQM rollover amount. None of this is new (they've been handling these late posting MQM additions for years now).

Looked at my skymiles activity again and the mqm was back dated to 12/31/2017, where the posted on date is still showing 1/4/18. Will edit my post to reflect that.

My 2018 status finally changed from Plat to Diamond today with my December bonus MQMs.

jakers3200 Jan 27, 2018 7:45 am

I might be the last member to qualify for gold in 2017.. my statement closed 12/26, and I hit the $25k spend requirement on about 12/30. Statement closed in 1/26, and now I'm waiting for the bonus MQM and miles to post. How long does that usually take? Finished the year with 41,200 so those miles will earn gold. I assume they will remove the 16,200 rollover mqm once they award the mqm for 2017.

deltalirious Jan 27, 2018 7:57 am

No, I doubt you're the last.
Still waiting for AMEX/Delta to post my "boost" 10K miles to my account.
Hit the spend threshold in late 2017, and still nothing in my SkyMiles account.

Yes, they will adjust you rollover amount after they adjust your status level. Boost should post a day or two after statement close along with normal redeemable miles and then it may take another day or two to sweep the MQM's back towards 2017 balance and make the adjustments. Note that all transactions must post by 2017 (it's the post date that matters, not transaction date). Some transactions can take a few days to post to your account. I would not be confident that a transaction made on 12/30 would necessarily post within the same year. Did you check your year-end summary online to make sure you exceeded the $25K? Also, if you pull down the PDF statement, it should show a "Miles Boost" activity under Bonus Miles Earned and Adjustments.

My statement closed on 1/25 and I just got an email a few moments ago about my Boost (Reserve card). So you will probably have to wait another day or two for a 1/26 statement close.
