I don't understand all the hate for LAX T5. I find it perfectly acceptable post-renovation, save for the narrow and drab T5-T6 connector....

T5 is fine for termination, but to connect with any ST partner you are on the street.

A nice terminal complex that has airside connectivity with the ST partners and TBIT is a win.

Wouldn't the T4-TBIT connector under construction help? I believe the T4-T5 connector is already re-opened.

Also +1 to the comments that T5 restaurants have improved quite a bit.

Good news in my book. Terminal 5 is a crap hole with no good restaurant options. Sorry I refuse to eat at mcdonald's.

And since Delta doesn't care about Alaska airlines anymore the T5-T6 terminal connector is not as important. That said how many people do fly into LAX on Alaska and connect to DL at LAX?

DL uses T6 a lot and connecting DL to DL I often have to under...

This may be the once-in-a-generation opportunity to achieve that, and with DL having very robust cash flow, too. If RA mentioned it, the company must already have seen or generated some proposals that looked promising.

Yes, but one can question the fraction of DL LAX traffic that is SkyTeam connecting vs. DL connecting vs. DL O&D (and match that against what could be achieved DL/SkyTeam with a better facility, and at what cost).

Delta publicly confirmed the plan, but said it's still subject to LAWA approval:

https://www.flightglobal.com/news/ar...at-lax-420660/

A few more details:

Roger Johnson, deputy executive director of airports development at LAWA, told Flightglobal in January 2014 that the operator planned to demolish and rebuild terminal three, which he described as being in the poorest condition of all of the terminals at the airport, once the new midfield concourse is complete.
There's also an image from the long-term plan, but it makes little to no sense...

T2 and T3 are hell holes delta would need to implode them and start from scratch

From a real estate point of view LAX may finally be abandoning the idea of widening the space of the northern runways. The image posted earlier was based on the assumption that the aiport would widen the space between runways, similar to the southern portion of the airport, This would necessitate eliminating the extensions of T1-3. Delta would need access to TBIT gates to match their operation to say nothing of expansion. Interestingly a connector for TBIT to T3 was planned but dropped as a combination of T3 limitations and because VA no longer boards from T3.

There are so many issues with LAX renovation/expansion I wonder what may is possible. The imminent issue may be legal. If this increases total LAX gate count then there will be lawsuits from NIMBYs. If the city owned gate space is reduced than LCC airlines may also sue.

DL is also not the only carrier making long term moves. LAX has floated taking over Park 'N Fly and either creating another extension for T1 or a Terminal zero. Expect Southwest to be vocal on any move that will limit their vision.

Lots of parties and lots of lawyers will be scrutinizing this.

From what we are hearing, that would be the plan.

The question I have is gates. Seams like that side of the airport has limited airside room.

I've never been to T2/T3 and I mostly connect to DL or AS when I fly into LAX but I don't mind T5. It has Skewers, Lemonade, some burger joint that I've never been to but is always busy, and the club is fine. The food is no worse than any other DL terminal IMO

OMG, T-3 is the most disgusting, horrible domestic terminal I have seen in the US. Makes LGA look pleasant.

That said, there is a rationale to get the major carriers for each alliance co-located and complete post-security connectivity between T-3 and TBIT. What's interesting to me is how UA is sitting on their gates. They have not been in much of a growth mode and have slipped to #3 in pax traffic at LAX behind DL and AA (though all three are close to one another).

If DL moved to T-2/3 I would pray hard for replacement terminals worthy of a 21st century airport. If that is the case we're talking years (if not a decade) before DL would move.

Only in 1 direction.

Exactly!

Correct! This is where they are going. Delta & Alaska is sharing the gates at entire T6.
