To the young family with the newborn in first class on the way to ATL on 7/26:

For the consideration of your fellow passengers, take the baby to the lavatory when a diaper change is required. There is plenty of room in there for you do what is required instead of subjecting your fellow passengers to smells that would gag a maggot.

Sitting in 7D on a 737-900 once, right next to the mid cabin lav. Both parent of a baby got up to change a dirty diaper. The dad was inside the lav changing while the mom held the door wide open and watched. The smell was pretty bad. Everyone around was looking at each other and scrunching up their noses. I stepped up and spoke up, asking the mom if she wouldn't mind closing the lav door. She smiled sweetly and said "sorry" and closed the door to let dad finish the job.

Of course, we could have all just sat their and gagged and addressed the mom and dad on FlyerTalk.com.

As a new parent who is pretty adamant that passengers should try to cut new parents a break....even i'll admit its freaking terrible to change a diaper at your seat. Unless you're 6'5" and on a E-135 or something, just go to the bathroom.

Changing a diaper anywhere but the lav should be against airline policy. Would you change an infant's diaper on the table of a restaurant? What makes it any more acceptable on an airplane?

Psychologists should do a study on "Airport Syndrome." Symptoms include otherwise civilized persons turing into complete slobs, acting in a manner which would be considered unacceptable anywhere else, and generally losing all sense of civilization.

I opened this thread expecting some crotchety guy to be saying how bad it is that people wear shorts, t-shirts, and flip flops in first class and was prepared for my reply that many times those outfits are nicer and cost more (I realize price doesn't bring class but) than the buy 1 get 8 free Jos A Banks suits but then I was actually offended by what the OP actually experienced. However, this has nothing to do with no class in First Class but no class on an airplane. Even the peasants in Y shouldn't be subjected to this.

But for the quick reaction of the lead FA, this almost happened on my ATL-LAX flight late yesterday.

I was in my favorite seat 9A chatting with my lead FA buddy, and this girl comes thru the curtain carrying a small child/toddler. I think that she was the nanny and was flying in Y with the munchkin.

She carries the child up to 5A to the mother, and lays the child down on the flat surface beside the seat and starts to take the child's pants off to change her pants.

All of a sudden the FA says OMG and takes off up the aisle. She tells the lady and the nanny that they can't change the child in an open cabin, and please go to the nearest lav.

The mother and the nanny seemed somewhat put out, but the nanny took the child back to a lav in Y.

Guess that you can pay to fly in F, but that doesn't mean that they had any class.

This happened to me on an AF A380 a few years ago. I was seated in the upper deck Y and this mother decided to change her baby's diaper in the rear stairs between the upper and lower deck. The smell eventually filled the entire upper deck Y, and unfortunately. none of the FAs bothered doing anything about it.

I agree and also its a health violation for feces to touch the seats. In the restroom at least you would put a pad down on the Changing table. Why should I have to smell your babies crap? If a Parent did this by my seat I would tell the Parent to stop right now and go to the restroom. I don't want to smell your baby and if the Parent refused I would ask the Flight attendant to reseat me away from any babies.

Oh and not having a changing table in the restroom is no excuse to change your baby in public. If the Parent kept the Dirty Diaper in the Seat Pocket I would tell the Parents off and tell them to go get a life and tell them how rude you are to make me smell your baby. I'm trying to eat or watch a movie. I would further get the pursuer involved as well.

Babies and their Parents should be placed on the Infant Do Not Fly List if the Parents let their babies scream throughout the flight, change their diapers in their seats and are inconsiderate to other passengers.

On British Airways they claim their Bulkhead Seats are also the Bassinet Seats and if its used you can't watch the IFE due to the monitor. In that case I would ask to be upgraded to a better cabin if a poor seat was available as the damn baby prevented me from watching IFE.

Personally I don't want kids because it would make it almost impossible to fly with them.

I would have moved up to Business Class and sat there . I would have used curse words to the Mother and of course demanded to speak to the Pursuer and ask to be reseated and to have the Mother help to clear the offending smell.

Your post is over the top. You realize that parents do not "let" their babies cry, right? Often, the baby are in pain from the air pressure. There is no "off" button on babies.

First of all, I don't see where the OP mentioned that it was a #1 or #2 diaper change. I have seen people changing pee diapers, with a changing pad underneath the kid. It didn't bother me at all.

Second, if the plane is in turbulent weather, it might actually be dangerous to try and change the kid. Of course I would never encourage parents to change stinky diapers in the passenger cabin.
