WOW!!! I am booked with my GUC for April. I am not finding any message in my account and the only flights I can find to BOM is through CDG on AF. I will need to call them to see what they are going to do for me.

So true. When it comes to flying I can't think of many things that put a smile on my face, but boarding the flight home from India is definitely one...

I feel ya friend. Just back from 3 weeks in India. Still recovering physically and psychologically. Wow.

We did 9 cities in 22 days going in and out with:

PDX-AMS-DEL
BOM-AMS-PDX

India is amazing, but I've been fortunate enough to always be visiting a friend who has arranged some things, which makes it a bit easier. :)

Don't get me wrong, I find India fascinating for both good and bad things. But one week doing business and I am cooked, I can't imagine 3.

My GUC had cleared when I purchased the tickets back in September. Today, I tried to look up the same dates on Delta website and the only flights showing up is routing through CDG on Air France metal. DM desk checked and they are showing that my flight dates are full and that is why I was not able to see Delta planes on those dates. I told her that my seat assignment page on my booking shows an empty plane with exception of myself and wife in business. She made some calls and came back to tell me that she does not have any information showing that Delta is cancelling there flights to BOM after March but she is happy to put me on a Air France plane in Premium Economy for $490 more which is in W class. I took that offer because earlier this year, I had a flight scheduled using GUC from SAN-JFK-PRG which is a seasonal flight and then they shortened the season by a month. They never let me know about that nor did it show up on there site of the change. I had to be proactive and they put me on different routing though CDG and I was able to use the GUC on Delta metal.

Something is not correct.
If I try to make a reservation for 2-4 weeks of travel in April, May, June or July 2015 directly at the Virgin Atlantic airline website it allows me to make reservations for dates way past this so called pull out date of Feb 1, 2015.

I would have HUCA. you would probably gotten a sympathetic agent to rebook at least USA-CDG in J for you.

Update 11/24: Delta pull out of BOM

Have been able to put together a number of potential speculative scenarios:

a1. KLM will increase frequency to India to 21 flights a week
AMS-DEL-AMS ... daily service (7 flights per week)
AMS-BOM-AMS ..... daily service (7 flights per week)
or
a2. AF will increase flights to BOM
or
a3. With one departure less from BOM-Europe capacity reduction comes into play.

+ speculation on KLM adding 3-4 flights per week to BLR and HYD

b. Virgin Atlantic (although initially supposed to end LHR-BOM-LHR service on Feb 1, 2015) will now ? (still to be announced) continue to offer this service with travelers using LHR as a connection point to the Virgin and Delta USA Gateways.

Remember that DL owns 49% of Virgin Atlantic.
Delta's share of revenues and profits are way better from the 49% JV than for the code shares with AF/KLM.

c. Is the EY + Alitalia Combo going to add more ST flights to India?

d. DL wants to focus on the high value and high profit TATL sectors only.
This maybe a good strategy for now ... but ignoring potential dynamic high growth markets like India could be a negative in the long run.

e. The lower rate of interest being given by USA EXIM Bank to purchasers of Boeing aircraft by airlines like AI, EY, QR etc seems to be a sore sticking point for DL.
The thought process is that these lower rates of interest are detrimental to being able to obtain higher prices as these airlines tend to offer heavily discounted fares from India to Europe and the USA.

What we now know are:
1. Delta is terminating it's contract with the BOM based Contractor.
2. Termination notices have been sent out to every employee at the BOM based contractor.
3. Have known at least 2 such employees for 25 years from their work at PANAM, then Delta, then NWA + Delta + Continental and now Delta.
4. Last date of a Delta operated DL Metal flight is March 31, 2015.
5. Cannot book seats on Delta for travel beyond March 31, 2015.
6. An attempt at booking seats on USA-BOM-USA for dates in May and June 2015 brings up flights through CDG only.
7. Can book reservations for USA-LHR-BOM on virgin Atlantic for travel in April, May, June, July 2015.

Personally am surprised that Delta will pull out of BOM, especially with my experience of most flights that I have traveled to and from BOM have been full. Besides, India is the market for the near term future.
Maybe we will start seeing more availability on Delta from USA-LHR and then Virgin Atlantic to BOM.

Let's see what happens.

FWIW, I flew this on Saturday. Well, I was supposed to.

One thing which I don't think has been mentioned is that DL, because it is an American carrier, has significant restrictions by the FAA on airspace that can be used reaching India. And while that will (hopefully) change at some point, for the interim, it has to be killing them. Here's why:

I was to fly BOM-AMS but upon checkin they were moving people to the VS flight to LHR because of weight and balance issues out of BOM. I later checked, and the VS flight to London took 9h41m. The DL flight to AMS took 11h16m because of the route of flight, to cover a shorter distance. If KL or AF fly this, it is a foreign carrier, and just like VS, they can use routes the FAA will not allow a US carrier to use.

Well, for whatever reason the FAA isn't allowing certain flight routings, the question is, these days, do you WANT TO fly a foreign carrier over those countries?

I agree--just giving you practical experience! If they're spending another 2.5 hours there and back per day, assuming the operating cost of one hour on an A330 is roughly $41k (I think I saw this stat somewhere for the A330), you're talking $100k in added expense per day vs. a codeshare partner. They've been flying these modified routes since late summer.

From an award perspective, this is not much of a loss.
