SWU coding question

I'm aware of issues with SWU requests for domestic flights being mis-coded so that they rank only at the complementary upgrade level rather than as SWUs.

I checked in for a flight last night and noticed I was already 6 on the upgrade list. I figured I'd give an SWU a shot to bump me up the list. I reminded the agent about coding it properly. She replied that she didn't know exactly what I was talking about, but that at this point there are two lists, but that I'm properly on both.

When I look at the upgrade list online/via mobile app, I'm still 6th. Is this a sign of mis-coding, or do I need to wait until the gate for the lists to merge and find myself (hopefully) at the top...or at least higher than I was before?

Thanks for your help.

Might have to check it out at the gate but it's worth calling again to get a diff agent. You could ask them to read you how it is coded in the system. This is a good thread to browse through:

Also MSP noted that she's seen what she thought was properly coded SWU's go wacky after OLCI:

And another good post:

Might also be worth Tweeting @DeltaAssist to have them check.

2 lists? Shouldn't the airport list be the list within the check-in window? That alone would have caused me to hang up & dial again. The fact that you didn't move up the list confirms you should do so.

The two lists are for the complimentary upgrade and for advance upgrades for miles/SWUs. Sometimes they will release UG inventory within the 24 hour window (I've been upgraded at T-20 before), so the SWU could still theoretically clear.

As referred to in the linked posts above, the key is to ask if your priority is UP2A or UP2B (depends if you are DM or PM). The online upgrade list displays incorrectly, however my guess is that since your position did not move, it was not coded properly and the agent only put you on the standby list to clear for SWU upgrade inventory which will not become available, and not so the system gives you gate upgrade list priority.

All the more reason for the OP to work it out so that #s 1-5 aren't upgraded instead.

If the OP had checked in, the agent should have been able to look at the Airport Standby List to see how he/she is coded. The agent's confusion over the coding & no movement up the list tells me there's a problem worth follow up w another agent or @Deltaassist.

You need to have the agent un-check you in, and then check back in.

The entire SWU process needs to be evaluated - there is far to much that goes wrong and needs to be fixed manually.

One of the biggest challenges for me has been that when a waitlisted SWU clears, a manual reissue and "clean up" of the reservation is frequently necessary before you can pick a seat. I us EF to warn me when this happens and then call delta...but still, it wastes my time and theirs as well.

This doesn't necessarily fix it. You need to find an agent that knows what they are doing. This is becoming less and less easy to do. A few months back I went through 5 agents with no luck and eventually gave up. Cost me the upgrade.

I sent DL customer service an email, but got sort of a useless response. Hopefully one of the DL people see these posts that come up periodically and address it.

The only thing I ask for is instructions that I CAN PROVIDE the agent on how to do it.

Follow up

Good news. I was just being antsy. I went to a meeting just after this post. Based on your feedback, I was going to call and inquire with another agent, but then I saw I'd been moved to the top of the list. Not sure if it was a system processing thing or if someone did something in the background.

And my SWU play worked too...I'm now sitting in business on SFO-JFK. (Hopefully none of you were on the bubble for this flight...)

Congratulations. As for the bubble medallion maybe next time instead of a Tiffany card they'll select SWUs. I am all in on transcon SWUs. A PM SWU is $50 and a DM a bit less....but it is a choice you make.

Hoping someone can help here. I have done pretty well with SWU's, even when wait listed. However, every time when I check my intinerary online It shows that separate segment (for examle DTW-LHR) separated. It shows my current Y seat and then shows BE Upgrade Waitlisted on a separate DTW-LHR segment with no seat currently selected.

Waitlisted for AMS-DTW currently and this time around I do NOT see anything in my itinerary that even mentions being waitlisted. Called back and Diamond desk says they see it there and emailed me my itinerary - this shows BE Upgrade Waitlist on AMS-DTW. Still not showing online though.

I printed out itinerary and will bring with me. Do you all think I am in the clear?

This is yet another nice bug with the craptastic DL website not showing all of your waitlisted segments. I have the same problem with a TPAC. I only see one flight showing waitlisted, and another one that the DM line says is on the list does not show up when I look at my itinerary.

You think all is good though behind the scenes? I don't want any surprises in Amsterdam

You may get one. It is KLM agents at AMS and they are notorious for not knowing or caring how to process the UG even if space is available.
