They have a massive data warehouse. You would be an idiot to think that they did not perform complex data analysis.

Hope they have better data than this...

Why bother? With MQDs, there is already a 10cpm average requirement, so I don't understand the need to slice MQM earnings on LUT fares too.

Just a gut feeling - maybe two or 3 years down the line - but I feel it coming.

I'm not saying I doubt you... I think it is coming too, and sooner than 2-3 years. My guess is the new coach fare classes are going to have some sort of reduced earnings. I just question the point of it when MQDs already exist.

Alas not really. With the apparently very imminent merger of AA and US, there are really only three major airlines in the US - DL, UA, and AA. Maybe that is what this is all about. No more choice for the passengers, so why worry about them going somewhere else?

Greed? on DL's part - for their stockholders of course;)

Hey guys and Gals - may I summarize this whole thread and others in a sentence or two?
Hey Delta - the ride was great while it lasted - thanks. We understand the need for change. Let us see what the future holds.

Your childish "duh" on behalf of someone who is not you indicates you know rationally that is the truth. You just need to learn to keep your emotions in check when it comes to business. Emotions do impact decisions; unfortunately, some people allow emotions to control decisions. If a business can fool you into doing that, power to the business. Pity the fool who is that naive.

It is beneficial, from Delta's perspective, to ensure that the most valuable customers feel an emotional attachment to the Medallion program. This is partly accomplished by affording Medallions a feeling of mutual respect and honest loyalty. When changes are made that complicate or frustrate these feelings, it hurts the program and damages the Delta brand. One does not have to be an idiot, or childish, to feel strongly about a FFP. Moreover, it is overly cynical (and unfair) to paint Delta as an inert entity, devoid of feeling. Companies are made of people. A company will make emotionless decisions only when the people directing that company are emotionless.

It is also important to recognize that emotion and reason are not mutually exclusive. I can have an emotional reaction to these program changes while still ensuring that my follow-through, as a consumer, is reasoned.

Because there are those of use who spend less than the required MQDs but get status thru the Amex back door. If DL cuts the MQMs of discount fares )(without overtly angering Amex), they can hope that some will drop down in status and still keep their DL Amex.

If it is a drastic cut then people may leave, but if it is, say 75% MQMs then some may just accept lower status (DM -> PM, PM -> GM) rather than leaving entirely.

This may be off topic but I think the issue with Delta is much more insidious than Elite status qualification ... next time you are on one of the refitted MD90s go back to the rear of the plane and ATTEMPT to sit in those seats ... Think of a 3 hr flight with your knees touching the seat in front. Heaven forbid when the person in front of you decides to recline all the way back! Economy Comfort means Economic misery for those who do not pay!

The Official Medallion Qualification Update Thread

The JV exclusion from MQDs is a HUGE loophole that tanks this whole new program. While I get the need for MQDs, spending on a metal-neutral JV that's advertised as such should count toward MQDs. If I fly DTW-CDG on AF, Delta gets the same revenue regardless of whether or not my ticket is plated DL or AF... so why shouldn't it be counted the same?

I gather, like many have, that it's simply a lack of ability to track customer spending across all JV partners with current revenue management systems. But, that's something that should have been worked-out BEFORE this new MQD rule was introduced.

But nobody is forcing the vendor to sell the same product week after week, and certainly nobody is forcing you to buy it. You realize you have gotten emotionally invested in your business relationship with a corporation, right? Just because you made the mistake of making it "more than just a business" to you doesn't make it more than just a business. It is a business. It is just a business. Nothing more. Nothing less. Your misperception does not make something more than it is.

Heck, I was upset AMC stopped making the Pacer before I was old enough to buy one, but I understand products change. AMC didn't have to keep making the Pacer anymore than DL has to keep offering the same benefits to the same people just because that's what they did last year or the year before.

BEST post of the entire thread ^

I think you are missing the point here. Many people on here are not questioning DL's right to modify or "enhance" the program. They are questioning whether the latest round of changes are good for the passengers.

You and a few others believe the changes are good for DL as a corporation and good for you as an individual passenger. Others disagree.

I think everybody on here gets the fact that DL can change or cancel the program at any point in time. The miles are owned by DL anyway, so they can do with them as they see fit.

help me with the M & ST MQM devaluation

To those who seek a more pure group of elites, help me understand how me losing the 50% MQM bonus on expensive international M fares is advantage for those who remain with DL.

When I pay $3.5 - $5K for an M fare and upgrade with SWUs, I never do so without confirming upgrades on all the long segments. All the domestic segments are also usually confirmed on the day of purchase and most buys are done months in advance of the trip. The greatest problem has been with upgrading out of hubs on non-DL medal - but still ST - like AMS, CDG and NRT.

So how does that purchase profile negatively impact other elites?

Of course they do

They can run reports on a PAX's entire, lifetime travel history, spend, patterns, etc.

I do not see this CNN blogpost quoted in this thread
http://finance.fortune.cnn.com/2013/...requent-flyer/
Likely because it's a bit too hysterical...
