The Definitive "Delta - TSA Pre-Check" thread

Frequent DTW flyer.
Have Nexus and Global Entry.
Have entered my Global Entry # in DL Traveler info.
Received e-mail from Delta and opted in.

Do I need a further authorization to use TSA pre check line at DTW.
Is there a random authorization to use the lane indicated on my BP somewhere.
I have flown out of DTW at least 12 times since inception of program and have never been offered use of Pre Check line.

Can I just enter Pre Check line and take my chances.
Appeciate hearing what others experience has been at DTW.

DTW_newbie

Folks,
Please use this master thread for all of you comments and issues pertaining to Delta and the TSA Pre-Check as there is no reason to have multiple threads on the very same subject.
Thanks, RSSrsvp - Moderator

Your boarding pass will be scanned at the checkpoint. If you qualify for Pre Check, you will be directed to the appropriate line. Selection for this new screening is supposedly random, so you are not automatically granted entrance every time just because of your credentials.

So you opted-in twice: once as a TT member, and again as a Delta PM? Usually people opt-in using only one method. This probably won't matter, but it is unusual.

19103_aa Jan 20, 2012 6:22 am

I hold both credentials as well and am 99% on going through pre-check through DTW. It is supposedly based on their scan of your BP. The one time was a flight to AMS. YMMV.

rubesl Jan 20, 2012 6:26 am

I have GE, Nexus & GM & am 50/50 at DTW.

Also, keep in mind the only checkpoint with a pre-check lane is the SkyPriority checkpoint on the north end of the upper level. None of the other checkpoints offer the option even if you are selected for it.

I'm not even sure you need to opt-in. I'm PM but haven't joined any of the NEXUS, GLOBAL plans but was selected in ATL on my last trip. Kinda surprised. The only membership I've had in the past was CLEAR (which hasn't come back to ATL yet).

I am in the same boat. Only Clear but have been sent to the "no take off shoes, take baggie out of suitcase, or take coat & belt off" lane both times I have actually had to clear TSA in ATL since they started this program. :D

I didn't say anything about opting in. My experience is the same as yours, minus CLEAR.

You "opt-in" by entering your Secure Flight Passenger Data in your profile and checking the box to consent to Delta storing it and sharing it with the TSA. If you received the email about the PreCheck program, you have been preselected based on your Delta status and do not need to fill in a Known Traveler Number. Just your name, gender, and birthdate.

5khours Jan 20, 2012 11:53 am

Is PM/DM a requirement. I'm GM and have entered by GE number on my profile.

bubbashow Jan 20, 2012 12:11 pm

Boy, however it happens, it is great when it does!!!

I went through last time for the first time and loved it!

Only Domestic itineraries are eligible for this program.

Did you get any of the emails about the program? Initially, it seemed like only PM's and DM's got the invitations, but more recently, there are Golds who have reported getting the emails. Also, if you have GE or Nexus, I don't believe you need to be pre-selected.

I got it even though I'm just Silver; and I entered the Known Traveler number or whatever on AA's site and got to use the pre-check line at AA's MIA terminal.

That is correct. TT members need only enter their PASSIDs into their Delta profiles to qualify.

us citizens only

Don't forget this is only for US citizens, so green card holders are a no go... I wonder why... I am pretty sure the US government has more info on me than on the average US citizen. I've been fingerprinted and photographed and interviewed etc...

DTW newbie Jan 22, 2012 1:56 am

Thanks to everyone for sharing their experience. Flying DTW - MSP Thurs 1/26.
We'll see what happens.

spudley007 Jan 22, 2012 11:10 pm

So far I'm 1/1 in ATL, 1/3 in DTW (2 misses were both on 1-way tickets, so perhaps that had something to do with it, who knows), and 1/2 in LAS (miss was on an international reservation). When it happens, it's great!

NYCsoundguy Jan 22, 2012 11:25 pm

I got selected at DTW as a GM with no other previous credentials. It really is great. Was on a domestic iten.

edit: Also was a one way. YMNK

Gripe with GE

OK, So I understand that the selection for Pre-check is "random"...but I flew out of MSP today at 12:20pm...there was ONE xray machine staffed at the SkyPriority lane and 6 million people in line....anyway

Here's my Gripe...why does someone who has done a background check, fingerprinting, interview, etc...have to be randomly selected? when a Gold medallion with no background check is considered more secure? Obviously, I did not get selected, left the skypriority lane, when to check point 6, stood in the regular line, and still got through faster. Rant over.

Because we are dealing with the TSA.

mgoflyer Feb 11, 2012 11:51 am

I have been at 100% when flying out of DTW since the program started and really like it. The only problen is that you get "spoiled" and have to go back to the routine on your return trip. With more airports being added, maybe that will become less of an issue.

DTW newbie Feb 11, 2012 4:25 pm

Not Selected :(

Flew 2 weeks ago. not selected. That makes me 0/13 out of DTW.

Did you fill out your Secure Flight Passenger Data profile and select the TSA consent check-box on delta.com? Are your flights all domestic? PreCheck does not apply if you have any international segments. The only time I have missed was when I had an international segment.

There is anecdotal evidence on the AAdvantage forum that if you have a BP for a domestic leg, and there are no more international legs left in your booking, that you are PreCheck eligible. For example, if you were flying SLC-DTW-LHR-DTW-SLC, you would not be eligible on the SLC-DTW leg, but you could be eligible on DTW-SLC.

SpinzCity Feb 11, 2012 6:35 pm

I never signed up for it, but am PM. In Vegas 2 weeks ago I got directed to the special line and breezed through without barely having to take my pants off or ANYthing. They swept me through it so fast that I was throwing objects from my pockets into the air and catching them on the other end.

No Nexus, Global Entry, or ex-CLEAR for me, nor did I get a DL email - but I'm 100% for pre-check at DTW.

jamesteroh Feb 11, 2012 10:39 pm

I'm a PM but no GE or NEXUS and luckilly I am 100% at DTW since they started the program and I LOVE it

Makes clearing security so much easier, just put your cell phone in your back pack and take off my jacket and that's it.

DTW is the only airport where it is in place that I have flown out of so far. I have a LAS trip in two weeks so hopefully I will have goo luck on that flight coming home as well.

MissJ Feb 11, 2012 10:54 pm

I'm GM and 100% at ATL since the program started. Love it.

Not member of Global Entry or Nexus, I need to get around to that. Also, never received an e-mail from Delta. I just showed up for a flight not long after the program started, had my BP scanned and was directed to the Pre lane.

Stripe Feb 11, 2012 11:16 pm

My info is filled in on delta.com and the box checked, but I did not get the speedy lane in DTW about two weeks ago. I guess I need more data points but I'm still not convinced that is all I need to do.

I have been using the TT lane with 100% success when flying AA out of DFW.

You must be a US citizen to use PreCheck.

I have my TT in my DL Skymiles profile. have flown 4 flights out of DTW since enrolled and tried each time to get thru Precheck lane upper level..denied each time...told each time its completely random.

I had a 4 hour layover after an AMS-DTW segment yesterday morning. Went outside to have a smoke, and upon checking in at the north Sky Priority area I was selected. I've never registered for any trusted traveler program. YMMV

Betel Feb 21, 2012 1:16 pm

I'm 10/12 in DTW. It is random, but you have to hit the Sky Priority line on the ticketing level. Actually been a few times on Monday morning when the Pre Check line was going slower since 1/2 people have no idea how it works. People are still taking off their belts, shoes and what not....

You don't have to be part of a trusted traveler program. Just make sure you have your full birthday, sex, and middle name in your profile.

jzumrick Feb 21, 2012 2:48 pm

Confused System

If you have read through all the Pre Check comments you might be confused. That is because while the idea is nice, the execution is confused. This program does not require any new equipment just a change in procedure. Why then such a long roll out time. Most likely they are quite sure how to do it yet.

A few comments talk about being selected for pre check. Seems that if you are qualified for the program, the you go through pre check and a few randomly selected for the normal check.

It will take at least a year for TSA to coordinate this.

3 for 3 in ATL. Mrsgator21 flew with me last time. FO and a former CLEAR member. She didn't get selected and had to wait in line. I took most of the carryon stuff with me, cleared security, went to the bathroom and still had to wait on her to clear security.

Random, random, random... And that is what TSA wants. Random with no clear definition or way to predict. Just wish more airports were included (like RDU).
