Regardless of how they ended up in F, glad to hear they got the full, first-class treatment. ^

I have to admit, I'm one of the DGOMCs when I go to a different city, particularly as a tourist. I remember being in a W & H Smith store in Kings Cross Station in London, and feeling self conscious that I was blocking the movements of everyone else in the store, as I was the only one there who didn't quite know where he was going, and everyone else was moving at warp speed.

This last Saturday, I went to Downtown Indianapolis -I got a few strange looks as I photogrpahed St Elmo's restaurant. I am sure some were thinking "It is only a damn restaurant" but St Elmo's is often in the Delta Sky Magazine as a Great Steakhouse of North America.

Damn tourists!!!

I watched a 1st time flyer on a flight may years ago (happened to be DL) long before I had any status on any carrier. Poor woman closed her eyes, gripped the armrests & cried quietly during takeoff. Once we were airborne, I started talking with her, and she described her fears about flying: she was a first timer out of fear, not lack of opportunity. She seemed to calm down while cruising, but started to get anxious again at the prospect of landing, and kept calling the FA's to ask questions.

I moved up to sit next to her & talked her through every sound she would hear and sensation she would feel. Each time I described something that then happened, her eyes went wide & and she got quieter, saying only 'I can't believe you knew that would happen/ sound like that / felt like that...it was just like you said. As we made our way off the plane, the FA's were wrapping by shoulder, mouthing silent Thank-yous.

It was awful to see her really suffer, and fun to help demystify things so she could chill & try to enjoy it a little. Would have loved to bey a fly on the wall for her return flight!

I have been there before, it got tiring after a bit saying, "now, this is what is supposed to happen next" or " this sound is normal" but I think it was well appreciated, and Lord knows I'd like someone to reassure me if I was in an environment that I had never been before. I remember the first time I was on a plane with engines at the rear, I was sitting at the back row and once takeoff / initial climb was over and the captain reduced power I sincerely thought the engines had stopped - such was the difference in noise - . It was the worst 2 seconds of my life:-)

I've found people freak out more with the noise on DC-9s that sounds like an alarm bell from a sci-fi movie. It's usually real loud right after push-back when they start up the engines. I've even seen people push the call button and instructed the FAs to tell the pilots that the alarm was going off, as if the engineers would put a safety critical alarm in the passenger compartment instead of the cockpit!

Similar experience here, flying into Boston in the late 80s, going back to college. Young lady next to me was in high school and traveling alone on her first flights (from Puerto Rico) to visit family. She was pretty nervous and chatty the whole flight. Rainy/foggy day, landing was aborted at the last minute & after a steep pull up the pilot announced, very calmly, 'we had a little difficulty lining up with the runway on that approach, going to circle back and try again' (something like that). My seatmate was clearly alarmed & asked me what he had said. I replied "sounds like he couldn't find the runway & we're going to try again." She grabbed my hand & started praying. In the end we landed smoothly. I was a bit freaked out too but somehow took the role of the calm, experienced traveler in that case.

Not sure if that was on Delta, at that point I took any combination of DL, Eastern, Piedmont, NY Air and anybody else who could get me between SAV & BOS the cheapest, typically w at least 3 segments each way. Ah, the good old days.

DTW-ORD flight on a A319, was in row 4C, middle was a first time flyer I guess by her remarks during the flight and the fact that she paid $ for a middle bulkhead seat on a 50 minute flight. None the less, we start our decent over Lake Michigan for O'Hare, women asks the guy in 4A, what happens if we land to quick and dont make it over the lake. The guy who was reading the SkyMagazine looks up, turns to her and says "These Airbus planes make good boats, they float real well" then went back to reading. I could not believe he said that, but after thinking about it for a minute, I realized he was referencing the US A319/A320 that landed in the Hudson.

I took my 3 (Correction, I'm told she is 3 and 3/4 years old) daughter to see the family. It's actually her 5th trip but I digress. We get upgraded to first on the way out and she is served breakfast which she very carefully eats and chats with her Daddy along the way. We get upgraded on the connection and she again behaves like a perfect little adult. On the return we DON'T get the upgrade. After leveling out and seeing the FA's walking toward her she politely asks if she can have her cereal now and informs them that Daddy will poor the milk for her. On a flight packed with elites in coach, that resulted in an additional 20+ requests for meal service and got everyone chatting. One of the most enjoyable flights in years. AND, she got some cereal sent back from a PAX in first!

I'm think she may have Kryptonium Medallion status after getting that personal invite from Richard Anderson ;) My lowly PM status on her PNR likely screwed her on the upgrade.

HA! I was on an ATL-GSO flight and when this happened; a woman behind me was having a conversation with her seatmate and she stopped all of a sudden and said "Ok, is something wrong??? I just heard an alarm go off". I had to bite my tongue so I wouldn't laugh out loud :D
