Aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, thank you. That makes sense. I know for international that SWU and miles upgrades aren't equivalent in that during all the discussion about any remaining BE seats being given at the gate to elites on the SWU waitlist, miles upgrades were never mentioned but I never do these and thus have never realized that the same is true for domestic flights. I guess it must partly be an issue of verifying and pulling the miles at the last minute.

+1, I think when it hits gate control (3 hours) SWU's trump all.

But then SWUs that are processed at the gate do not require the ticket to be reissued like SWUs processed in advance?

They should still have to be reissued.

No - DL automation automatically closes out the SWU once the flight is dispatched.

I was told there is a desk that processes the SWU later on, in fact I've seen some SWU's get closed around 2 days after the flight was flown.

Posts such as this discourage me from posting in the forum. It is getting a bit ridiculous in DL land... Ham sandwich and all...

If you "win the SWU lottery", automation automatically queues your PNR to have the cert pulled. There is no additional "work" for the GA... Miles, on the other hand, require a manual reissue and that you sign the redemption receipt.

Depends, often when SWU's are pulled for waitlist and cleared at the gate, the SWU number and cert number are not put on the PNR. Hence GA's will page you and require you to give that info to them before you board.

This shouldn't happen if the SWU was entered properly by reservations when you requested the waitlist. More times than not it is done improperly.

So if one is on the wait list for a day of departure SWU upgrade, it would be wise to have printed a copy of the SWU or the listing of certs in one's profile in order to be able to furnish a SWU number to the GA quickly?

In this case, does the GA also need some redemption code also from the SWU? I remember once having to give this on the phone in the early days of electronic DL SWUs when I discovered the evening before a trip that someone had managed to reissue my ticket without pulling the SWU. (The supervisor was amazed and it took about an hour on the phone with the reissue desk to fix this. I don't know whether it would have given me trouble for OLCI or at the airport.)

Yes, it can help... Otherwise the agent has to look at your profile and obtain the numbers. Depending on the agent, this could take a while... FYI, if you don't give them one they usually snag any of the available ones and (should) pick one that expires sooner than the others (if you have SWUs with different expiration dates)

Not always. I will be flying TLV-JFK-ATL next month and paid 25,000 SkyMiles for the upgrade. I paid the same 25,000 for ATL-JFK-TLV but as there is no current availability on the ATL-JFK segment I am being wait listed.

As the SkyMiles have already been paid, if I get the upgrade there should not have to be any manual reissue.

Your ticket has been reissued for the legs you cleared on but not for those that you are waiisted for. You will not sit in Business (Z) if your ticket is not reissued into business.

Also, for clarification purposes, if G/Z is available at time of request, the reservation agent will reissue the ticket and you don't have to physically sign.
