Guys,
I am NOT lying, and I truly don't appreciate you guys saying that...
I don't know where you are looking, but you could ask anyone on that flight...
That same day, I still rememeber there was a flight to Bangkok also cancelled...

I did not want to book a hotel unless Delta gave one...
Also, I did not bring this up because I had more important things to do...

I am honestly not lying...
I even have the prrof in my skymiles online record..

iluvairlines Dec 29, 2011 4:59 pm

I have proof...
Just found this:

While I wasn't calling you a liar or turning against you, I am still curious why you waited this long to bring this up on FT or with DL... Especially noting your registration date on the forum as July, 2011...

Damn, Delta did screw up this one. I think you should be offered 500 in vouchers and atleast 20k miles.

iluvairlines Dec 29, 2011 5:11 pm

Thanks for acknowledging their mistake...
I think everyone else should blame them instead of me....!@:-)

When you give incorrect data:

no weather problems

you can't expect correct replies. You said the event was in July 2011 when in fact it was in June 2011. That might seem trivial to you, but FT'ers are notorious for "getting to the bottom" of issues. Lesson to be learned: be more specific and more careful next time.

Thanks!

Sorry for giving the wrong info!

Ignoring all the meladrama, this does pose an interesting question.

Is a bird strike considered WX, MX, or "Avionics"?

MR_MAMA Dec 29, 2011 6:31 pm

I think a bird strike is an act of God, something beyond their control so no comp was probably offered initially. However, when did you ask for comp? Now or right after it happened? Waiting 5 months isn't going to get you anything.

I would have booked a hotel then asked for reimbursement after the fact, or even booked an award night at a hotel, would never sleep on the floor.

From the article, it doesn't sound like the bird strike happened to the OPs plane, rather that his aircraft was used to ferry passengers from the affected flight. +1 to booking your own hotel and asking for reimbursement later. And I definitely agree with others that requesting compensation in writing would probably be much more effective, although this long after the fact there might be little more to be gained.:(

...

Does not matter. DL uses the concept of "original cause" in attributing blame to the event.

It is possible that a butterfly flapping it's wings in SYD can cause a gate delay in ATL.

CalVol Dec 29, 2011 7:00 pm

This year I've gotten 7500 miles for a non-working headphones jack ATL-PTY. I also got a $50 cert for problems booking a flight via dl.com and a $75 cert for a several hour MX delay. I was FO at the time.

You definitely deserve more.

Good luck.

I was on a DL flight that was cancelled from NRT-Minneapolis. I waited in the airport for five hours, and they then told me to come to a meeting. They said that we would be transported by bus to HND Airport, and from there get on a plane to Detroit, not Minneapolis. So, I went to Haneda, expecting to get put in a hotel. I did not get put in a hotel, and I had to sleep on the ground of the airport for ten hours...

Then, when we arrived in Detroit, I was put on the standby list for a flight to Houston. The standby did not clear, and I was put on the next flight.

Finally, I arrived in Houston 19 hrs. late. When I called customer service, I got offered either a $100 voucher or 5,000 miles AS A PLATINUM MEDALLION!

Is this absurd, how much should I be offered?

Have a happy New Year!

iluvairlines

Wow! You got hosed! You might have waited too long for better comp, but it's worth a try.

Going forward, if it was me and I was member in as many programs as you and I would assume you would have some decent point balances you should just get a room instead of sleeping at the airport.

FlytheTail Dec 29, 2011 9:21 pm

Waiting 6 months to address this issue shows it's a very low priority to the OP. Delta might make the same interpretation and offer you a gesture of goodwill. Considering this is related to an "act of God", I wouldn't expect much. Send a note through Delta's Comment/Complain link and briefly explain the situation. I'd expect a $200 TCV or 10-15K miles. Good luck.

shawbridge Dec 29, 2011 11:07 pm

I have always wondered about the FT folks who seem to assume that posters are making stuff up. Not sure why anyone would waste their own time by repeatedly posting about a fake experience, but maybe you guys have experienced people doing this.

I would be annoyed and feel undercompensated by Delta in the OP's position. I am also busy enough that raising compensation from $100 to $500 does not, on its own, merit more than an hour of my time. So, if I were busy, it might take me a fair bit of time to figure out how to deal with an unresponsive Delta.

I think you should go up the food chain with your complaint. You should say that you are a loyal customer as your FF status indicates. If you do not get adequate compensation of $X (say $500 for the purposes of illustration), you will make some assumptions about their margin (say 10%) and then shift twice $500/10% of revenue or $10000 to competitors so that they will suffer a loss equal to twice what they would have to pay you. Don't get mad. It's their choice. Pay you $500 now (which is really only $400 more than they already offered) or lose $10K in business implying a loss of $1000. You can adjust the factor of two as you see fit (e.g., four times if you prefer). Then see how they respond. If they say yes, you've achieved you objective. If they say no, put this behind you and live a long and happy life.
