Scanner on board?

I know this more of a "Delta" question and not a "Skymiles" question... but still...

Can you bring a scanner (not transmitter, only receiver) onboard a Delta flight? I wouldn't ever turn it on, but would like to keep it with me for use in the airport and on my trip. Also, I don't trust putting it in my carry-on luggage. I asked Delta via e-mail, but they said it was prohibited from being on the plane or operated...

Delta's site says

Devices You Can't Use

For safety reasons, you may not operate the following devices onboard:

Two-way transmitters such as walkie-talkies, amateur radios, citizen band (CB) radios, 49 MHz transmitters
Devices designed to radiate radio frequency energy on specific frequencies
Peripheral devices for computers or games connected by cable
AM/FM radios
Portable television sets
Remote control toys
Bluetooth-enabled devices
Personal Air Purifiers
Smokeless cigarette/cigar/pipe devices
Technically, a "scanner" is none of these... Thoughts?

As long as it stays off you're fine.

And we are "100% sure" about this? I guess I just leave it off and in my backpack and no one is the wiser, right?

Delta won't be checking your carry on, it'll be the TSA. So if they ask what it is and you can convince them that it's ok to have, bring all you want, just don't turn it on. Oh, leave the laser printer toner cartridge at the office.

I have brought plenty of large electronics (including RF) on flights. never an issue. I will agree with not turning it on (or even opening the bag) in flight.

But you have to go through TSA.

So BE VERY CAREFULL not to bring nail-clippers or a tube of toothpaste.

If you are trying to listen to ATC/Tower/Etc why not just go with a free site like:

http://www.liveatc.net/

I listen on the plane all the time. Just about every freq/major airport clearance, ground, tower, approach, center is out there and in real time.

Technically a scanner is a receiver in the same class as AM/FM radios, so it is not permitted to be used on board. Even receiver-only sets emit some RF due to their IF stages, hence the restriction. As with any other radio, it should get through security just fine.

OP, this might be useful:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/trave...cpu-carry.html

In the thread, I had asked if I could carry a CPU tower on-board. The answer is, yes I could and I did, twice. It was not on Delta, but I think the same policy should hold good.

Classification aside, the website states you may not operate these devices, not that you can't carry them on board. Essentially the same as cell phones.

They should not allow you to bring a Scanner on the plane--they make people's heads explode!!!

I've carried ham radios onto planes before.... No issue as long as you don't turn it on.

I love that scene. I will be sitting in meetings imagining that happening to the knucklehead sitting across from me more times than I can count :)

+1

I've often flown with a scanner that had an earphone, but learned to put it in a different bag from my camera gear in the days when I used film packed in a lead bag.

I've carried on my scanner several times on DL when heading to nascar races. no problem at all.
