How many DM exist in the SkyMiles program?

I was just wondering how many DM members exist in the sky miles program. I was having a discussion with a friend and we couldn't really figure it out. Can anyone shed some light onto this question. Thanks.

I was told last year that there were 32,000 DMs on March 1, 2010 (true charter members).

I believe it was mentioned at the DO as well that the number was around 37,000 DMs.

As opposed to fake charter members? I believe Delta's definition of a charter member is anyone who earned Diamond status in 2010.

Is that like fake cheese or something? I'll have to squint closer at the DM tags to find the difference. Then again, maybe that equates to "fake" charter DMs being more stable, since "fake" cheese is shelf stable... :D

If there are 32,000 DMs most of them reside in the NYC/ATL/LAX/SFO airport areas. When I fly other cities im always the only DM on the flight, per flight attendant greetings.

Mersk862 is pretty accurate.. I've heard in the trenches that 35-37K DM exist.

That means that there are quite a few more now. "Charter members" means the initial ones. But after a year of flying in 2010, others would have joined the ranks.

Yes, but in less than a month and a half, the ranks will be trimmed when some charter members lose status. Everyone who made DM during 2010 has a tag that says "Charter Member", FWIW.
