Rude FF gets his due...

Sitting in 1B on a long haul yesterday (that unbeknownst to me at the time was going to become 2 hours longer due to weather) and overhead a FA conversation that gave me a good chuckle.

When the boarding door closed, one seat in FC was open. The FA looked at the upgrade list and sought out the #1 waitlisted Medallion member seated back in 23F to let him know he could move to first class. She approached him just as the 'turn off your cell phones' message was completed. He happened to be on his cell phone, when she spoke up to offer him the seat all she got out was "Sir...". He went ballistic, yelling at her that he was on an important call, he'd get off the damn phone when he was done, and to get off his back.

She proceeded to tell #2 on the list the FC seat was open for him to take.

:D

JOSECONLSCREW28 Jun 3, 2010 12:24 pm

Well that sucks for him, tht FA was letting him knw he can move from his coach seat, to a FC seat, but he lost his chance, so therefore number 2 got his chance.

mrredskin Jun 3, 2010 12:35 pm

she should have kicked him off the flight if he did exactly as you described

WBurcham Jun 3, 2010 12:45 pm

Ouch.

Nicely done!

Nice to hear!

I like hearing stories like this! ^

ucla99 Jun 3, 2010 1:04 pm

#2 deserved the upgrade much more than #1! There's no reason to be rude to a FA. If it really is that important of a call, he could politely say, I'll be off in just a minute. Being rude is not going to get him anywhere. Or he could just take the next flight out and stay on the call.

Karma indeed.

Just wondering...has anyone ever been on the other end of the phone when this happens?

I don't know how I would react if someone I was talking to/doing business with reacted like that.

Granted...maybe it was a personal call...or even quickly muted.

Just wondering...

Personally...whether business or personal...if someone on the other end of the line did that...I would hang up.

Bravo!

FlyingUnderTheRadar Jun 3, 2010 1:23 pm

What would have been icing, is if later the FA went back to the PAX and said something along the lines of, "Sir the reason I was trying to talk with you is because we had a FC seat available but because you asked not to be interrupted I gave the seat to another PAX."

Oh can you imagine? The volcanic ash spewing forth from his ears would surely have grounded the flight for weeks!:D

Can't wait to check the other side of the story about shenanigans!

Either that, or if the PAX is reading this on FT today....

Pharaoh Jun 3, 2010 1:40 pm

I hope he was in sight of #2 and saw the relocate.

CaseyN2 Jun 3, 2010 1:47 pm

Good story.

The question I have, why does the FA has a copy of the upgrade list ?
I have in the past asked the FA's if they could move up my son, who was on the upgrade list but did not get a seat, I was always told that they could not move people up.
Good story though.

We very rarely get a upgrade list. When we do it is usually the gate agent asking us if we could upgrade using the list. But it is maybe a 1% chance this ever happens.

We are not suppose to move anyone up except military. But if i see a diamond, platinum or even a gold I will move them up if there isn't military onboard

Zacnlinc Jun 3, 2010 3:24 pm

My guess is that #1 FF was upset since he didn't the upgrade he was hoping for. too bad he had to bark at the FA. Oh well, it would have been nice to have confirmation that #1 saw #2 moving his bag and himself for Y to F. :D

I'm a bit confused. I can see if there were time restraints involved and the agent knew who was next for an upgrade and just asked the FA to get that customer and move them up after the door was closed. But why wouldn't the agent just upgrade the medallion members at the gate instead of passing it off to the FA's by giving them a list?

If there were seats available to upgrade military (which I have no problem with) doesn't it stand to reason that all eligible medallions were already upgraded?
Just wondering.

skowse Jun 3, 2010 4:20 pm

That's how I interpretted it.

I think the
FA should have told him after or at least the OP should have.

Good story.

What's interesting is someone sitting in 1B was able to hear something that went on in 23F (ok, the word "ballistic" was used) *and* that 1B was able to identify the exact seat this happened in.

BTW, the FA doesn't have the authority to throw someone off the plane, including Mr. Rude 23F. FA would have to get the Captain to do it I believe.

Actually we do have the authority. I've denied boarding to passengers waiting to board. I simply tell the GA my name, clock number and the reason for denied boarding. I take full responsibility for the denied boarding. As a courtesy I will notify the Capt.

If something should happen on the plane, I simply notify the Captain of the problem and that someone needs to be removed. In 35 years, I've never had a Captain deny my request. Requesting to have someone removed from a flight isn't taken lightly. The FA had better have a good reason for someone removed. If a FA is acting out of spite for whatever reason, they can be disciplined and if it is a pattern with an individual, they'll probably be terminated.

Strictly by the rules this may have been shenanigans, but this is shenanigans I can handle. People who truly have important calls/conversations don't act like this (or even talk loud in cafe's or other public places) so this was not really that important of a call. :-)

Nope! He would have written in with some made-up story about how the FA was extremely rude to him and denied him an upgrade, etc., etc., etc. The FA did exactly the right thing!

The best thing is treat others how you would like to be treated. Empathy with a hassled GA has gotten me a few upgrades over the years.

Exactly. Or they would be in paid F or a private jet already.

yes. #1 was talking on the phone and thought the FA was going to scold him, so when he was rude, the FA upgraded #2 instead.

in other words, #2 got upgraded instead of #1 because even though #1 was about to be notified of his upgrade, his rudeness caused the FA to skip him, and since #2 is right after #1, #2 got the upgrade.

Also, I like turtles.

It's the little things that make life fun from time to time. It's like watching some jerk stuck in traffic behind you decide he's better than everyone else and just drive on the shoulder to his exit, then watching the cop sitting in front of you pull in right behind him. :D
