My kids went to much less expensive schools and have been travel hacking since they were in high school.:D

Hope his degree will pay for his travel now that CC churning is becoming much more difficult.

I wish I had figured this out while I was in university :)

I don't really consider churning travel hacking in the first place. Back during my undergraduate days, I found a succession of coupon deals which were my first attempts at travel hacking. First with Western Pacific, then the TWA Youth Travel Kit which ended up helping me with AA and finally with Northwest fliers.

I remember walking around the mailroom and picking up these NWA vouchers that offered flights across the country based on zone. Sure wish those still existed!

giving that most banks require a spend of $3K-$5K if not more in just 3 month for a decent signup bonus I do not think this game is for an average student.

Actually, using credit cards to pay for tuition and books is a great way to meet minimum spend requirements.

Only if you can pay them without a convenience fee.

Depending on how big the fee is, it may still be worth it for a good sign-up bonus. There are usually lots of parents on FT in September discussing how many points they got for paying their kids tuition.
