Since I'm not really confident coin/plastc wont be vaporware before EMV is mandatory, I got one of these instead, since you can buy and actually get it now: http://www.looppay.com/products/
They do this crazy thing where they inductively couple with the magnetic head, so that you just hold it near the reader and press a button instead of doing a swipe. I bought the fob one initially, but it's weird in that you have to have it attached to the headphone jack, which is more of a song and dance than I'd like. The bluetooth one fixes a lot of that problem, though you still can't select a card from it directly. I've also found that it's often more trouble than it's worth when eating out (no display for last four digits, it's unfamiliar, no card network name) or paying for gas (they have a dumb workaround with trying to use some card without a stripe, but it's super hard to get to work). That said, it works as advertised on most point of sale machines and vending machines when you're right in front of the magnetic reader or can coach someone with it. It also works with weird cards like my Target and JCB card, and you can put in gift cards with your name on them in it as well. |

Well, they have listed multiple banks they have partnered with.
https://www.plastc.com/wallet I suspect they will use similar methods that Apple Pay/Google wallet use where they use a virtual card system. Plastc Inc., this website and the products and/or services offered on this website are neither endorsed, nor sponsored by, nor affiliated with, the above-referenced banking/financial institutions and/or retailers. |
Plastc will start shipping it's cards out on April 29, so you still have some time to think about it, but for those of us who have 20+ credit cards, this thing will really come in handy.
I own the COIN card already and it has it's pitfalls, such as only 8 cards at a time, no chip embedded and it annoyingly only allows you to name cards with 4 letters. The Plastc card shows you everything you need to know and it can even include your picture on the E-ink display. It is expensive- $155 if you order before April 29, 2016,...If you're thinking about it just a little bit, then just bite the bullet and go for it, as after April 29, 2016 it will go for $180 plus $50/year after the first 18 months. This $50/year is waived if you pre-order before April 29, 2016. Cheers! |
Did they announce anything new about the EMV support? I think people are waiting precisely because that functionality could very well not end up being implemented.

I'm surprised none of you have noticed that this thing as a built in battery that lasts only 1 year and is not replaceable. So even if you get a life time subscription waiver and get an extended 2 year warranty, you'll have a dead unit every 1-2 years.
So ask yourself are you willing to pay $150+ a year to have multiple credit cards stored? This is a great product and I fell in love with it but not with that fact that I'll be paying to get it replaced one a year. |

Perhaps. Or perhaps because it's just a silly ridiculous price.

Can you store debit cards (including VGCs) on Plastc, or just credit cards?
Can you do ATM withdrawals? |

Can you do ATM withdrawals? I'm interested, but still on the fence. There are invite codes floating around out there for an extra $20 discount, but I only carry a limited amount at one time (debit, CSP, Freedom, Amex, Prestige, Priority Pass, DL). |
Just saw this article this morning and hadn't heard any mention of it on FT. It looks like a worthy future contender to Plastc when it's released here...at least for those of us that are holding out longer on the all-in-one cards.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/n...surcharge.html I haven't been following Plastc much lately, so I'm curious to see what those of you who know more about Plastc think - barring that the Curve card is obviously still in development and hasn't hit US or Android yet. |

They've updated the website with this:
Chip'n'Pin* Plastc Card is built with the hardware to support EMV payments however support for EMV will not be available at launch. EMV requires Plastc to have relationships with payment networks and banking institutions to be able to support that technology. Firmware updates will enable this technology. |
