There doesn't seem to be much on the west coast right now. I wonder if any of the Walmarts in places like LA have EMV readers enabled (Popular tourist area).

I used my BA Visa (EMV+Sig) at Walmart in Huntington Beach, CA (near LA) on a ship to store purchase at the end of March. I first swiped it but the clerk at the Customer Service Counter told me I needed to insert it so he was really on the ball. I told him this was the first time in the US that I've had the chip feature used. He said he's only had a few customers with a chipped credit card. Very bright young man - I gave him the highest rating in a customer survey I received after the transaction.

Which one was it? The one closest to the beach, I assume?

EDIT: oh, ship to store. Not ship to shore. Could be either one, then.

BOA Alaska used EMV at Walmart in KS on 5/4/2014. Tried swiping multiple times until I read the reader which instructed to insert the EMV chip. Success.

LOL, follow the prompts.

From what I can tell, most Walmarts are now EMV-enabled. According to @jamar, the big one in Missoula (that I don't like) still isn't though. I imagine at this rate, it will be any week now.

Hmm, might worth to go to the Walmart in Torrance, CA again this weekend then.

Looking across the internet it seems like since they enabled that big group of 1000 stores they seem to be enabling more and more every day.

Same here, first time was yesterday at the Walmart in Cerritos, CA. Swiped it, but the cashier saw the chip and told me to insert it. I actually had to hold my card there (CSP); the weight of it was causing it to slide down a little and lose connection. Took 3-4 tries before it finally took.

They have a bizarre orientation in Walmart for the chip readers. The ones I've seen practically seem vertical.

Then just tilt them up. They tilt down for wheelchair users.

Yeah, like I posted in #30, the one in Delaware I hit a lot *just* switched on last week. They are rolling it out pretty quickly now.

At this pace, they'll have it done LONG before their publicly stated EOY2014. Congrats, Walmart, on (ironically) being the only one to make SERIOUS efforts at promoting security.

Target not caring about security, was, of course, no real surprise - they had been very anti-EMV, anti-privacy laws, anti-everything really.

Is it possible that Walmart negotiated very favorable credit card processing terms (lower fees per swipe/chip transaction) in exchange for turning EMV on? They do have the purchasing power to arrange something like that and would explain their push since they haven't had a breach in the past.

I doubt it. I just think there planning a bit further ahead than most other retailers. They already have a lot of experience with EMV with their subsidiaries like ASDA in the UK.

Interesting to come across this thread...

All the USPS post offices in NYC area seem to have EMV terminals but I havent had the chance to use my chipped cards there to see if they are switched on..

Additionally, American Apparel stores in the area have brand new EMV terminals but they are not switched on as of last week.

Lastly, I recently noticed that it appears that all Duane Reades seem to have EMV abilities (when they updated everything around the time of google wallet's roll-out) but the slot is blocked out with grey plastic.

So alas, zero purchases with EMV in the US :(

Used it (Chase Marriott) Monday at the Walmart in Brunswick, ME at self-checkout. It's very recent because I seem to try it almost every week...no signature required (<$50 I guess ?).

Cheers.
