I used the self-checkout with EMV today at the Bristol, PA Walmart. I was able to get a few pictures. Not too many people were in the store, and the self-checkout attendant was assisting another customer, so I didn't feel like they were giving the, "Hey what are you doing!" look. :D

This is a UK-issued AmEx, right?

Although we know what EMV is and where to find the slot and "stick them in," I wonder what the average joe/jane would think when the insert card slot is in this bottom portion no one expects to see.

Don't EMV slots in other countries are in a more, how should I say, "more obvious" place that's plainly visible?

Given Walmart uses the same exact terminals in other countries, I wouldn't think so :)

Its probably more the orientation of the machines more than anything. The slot is practically vertically facing in Walmart. The terminals themselves are exactly the same ones used at some self service checkouts in Asda (A walmart company) in the UK.

Yup, I've shopped at Asda. And at Walmart in Canada. Always the same Ingenico terminals. I don't know if they use the Verifone ones they have in the staffed lanes here at any stores in other countries, but the Ingenico ones are the same worldwide.

I do agree, the mounting in the self-checkout here is a bit odd - I think it's to be wheelchair accessible. The staffed lanes have tilt mounts you can lift up but many are broken and literally vertical at the big store that just turned on EMV, so you have to hold the reader up to use the chip slot (it's just loose and doesn't stay up, broken may be the wrong term).

I think while the orientation seems counterintuitive it is likely to make the terminal accessible. If you were in a wheelchair and the PIN pad was blocked by the card sticking out of the front it would be difficult to interact with the pad to sign or enter your PIN.

Yeah, that's what I was trying to say, plus just SEEING it horizontal from a wheelchair would be difficult.

After a successful run with my Citi HHonors Reserve Visa (chip + sig) at my local Wal-Mart, I decided to try the USAA MC chip + PIN card I have today to see if Wal-Mart would ask for a PIN instead of a signature.

I swiped the card so it would prompt me to insert the chip. After inserting, it recognized the card as a Mastercard and waited for the cashier to total the transaction. It then asked me to confirm the amount. After a second, it then asked for my PIN. After entering, the terminal beeped and told me to remove the card.

The receipt does confirm the PIN was used. I spent over $25 so I am not sure if the PIN would always be required or just above a certain amount (like the current "no signature required" policies some stores have).

I bought a $2 bottle of cough syrup at my local Walmart today with my USAA MC. It required a PIN, even for a $2 sale. My guess is that the USAA card doesn't support the "No CVM" mode.

A ~$10 purchase via chip with a Chase Visa at the same store last week went through with no signature.

All EMV cards (apart from cards in the Netherlands) have to support NO CVM, its just that the terminal won't skip any of the CVMS. So if the terminal supports PIN and the card supports PIN and thats the priority method for the card, that's what'll be used regardless of the amount.

When you use a chip and signature card, the CVM will still be signature its just that the terminal won't actually request a signature from you.

The only time the actual "No CVM" code is usually used even if their is a PIN PAD or Signature acceptance is during a contactless transaction.

Oh cool, Mitsuwa San Jose has them active! I wonder if the rest of Mitsuwa locations are on too?

That looks like a First Data FD100 receipt, if so it'd just depend on if they have the EMV PIN pads. It'd be just like Zumiez - locations with EMV PIN pads have EMV, locations without, don't.
