Basically, the loophole is that if you get "instantly" approved by the computer, it doesn't check whether you're preferred. If it goes to a human , they do check and you're definitely declined if you're not preferred. And the decline, if it happens, may or may not prevent you from being approved if you then try the other link, I dunno.

So I guess it's on how risk-averse you are (to risking it all over the anniversary 10k)?

Just wanted to provide an update to this. I applied for the card using the "Preferred" link with the extra 10K anniversary miles. I am not a Preferred member. My application went pending online so I called barclaycard recon immediately after. After a short 5-minute conversation going over my application, the rep approved me for the card with a credit line of $7,500. No questions were asked about my status as a Preferred member. I have a FICO credit score of 760, 4 hard pulls in the last 6 months, and an Arrival+ card with a $10k credit line.

I opened the card around Oct. 20 for 40k. I called today and the CSR offered me the bonus 10k immediately as a courtesy. The whole phone call, even with hold time and automation, was 4 minutes long.

Additional data point: called in today. After some negotiation I was offered the bonus 10k too (I used the Preferred link).

Do you think it's safe to apply for this card even though I just got the Barclays Arrival Card 3 months ago? These are basically as good as AA Miles, right, since the merger occurs in 2015?

I know Barclays is stingier than other companies on # of cards applied for in a short time span. I've applied for 4 other cards this year (United/Barclays Arrival/Delta Gold/IHG Rewards), with one of them being IHG Rewards Card just yesterday through the "80k" link here on FT.....

applied using the 40k offer link on 12/1, sent a SM to match the 50k offer and they told me the 10k will post with the first statement.

ninim2200 Dec 5, 2014 6:41 pm

applied and approved on 11/2. sent an SM to match/upgrade me to the 50K, they replied to call them, i did. i asked the CSR to upgrade my account to the new offer of 50K, she put me on hold for a couple of minutes and gave me the 10K.

Applied and approved on 8/26.
Apply again today, auto declined. According to the rep, I can have only 1 card. The system auto declined, didn't pulled credit.

same data point: applied and approved on 11/11. Sent SM, was asked to call. Called, at first the CSR refused because she said the 40k + 10k anniversary is indeed 50k, I told her it's not. After putting me on hold for 5 min, she came back and told me the request to add 10k has been sent and it will show up couple weeks later.

Had my first one on Feb 2013(AF wavied for 1st year), 5K limit cancelled on Jan 2014

Apply my 2nd cc on March 2014, instantly approve, 10k Limit, but have to pay 89 AF, still active

Applied my 3rd one, instantly approved, 7.5K limit( dropped). Since I am instantly approved, hope I will get my 50K bonus miles.

Almost identical to the above, except first two were opened closer together; got reconned just now.

AF waived

Called to see if the AF can be reduced for the USAirways card opened a year ago . Got transferred to an account specialist. The agent offered to waive the annual fee plus x2 miles for gas, grocery, and utility for 90 days. Accepted, of course.

The other card I manage also got the AF waived but nothing else.

Any chance you meant November 20 ?

My dad got his card October 28 and I called and SM'd with no luck.

I opened my card 11/3 and got the extra 10K with no issues via SM and as several other people have posted was told you had to apply 11/1 or later to get the extra 10K

I opened in late Oct. It was a no go for 10m extra miles but did offer 5M for a S1000 spend in Next three months. That seemed reasonable to me.

iliketurtles Dec 5, 2014 11:29 pm

Just to be clear. We are able to cancel this card after the 50k miles post into our account and they will not be taken away?

Circuits Dec 6, 2014 1:09 am

Data point - sent SM and was contacted back by Barclaycard that 50k will post after first charge and annual fee. Applied and approved online 11/30 or 12/1 (I forget).

Undecided about whether I'll renew in a year for the 10k renewal bonus (also offered, as part of the DMCP link) - but that's a year off, so I'll decide closer to then.

iliketurtles: Some cards will charge back the miles if you immediately or proximately cancel after they post. As with most bonus offers, you may need to keep the account open and in good standing for some reasonable period of time (more than a month, less than the full yearly membership term) to avoid a chargeback. If you've followed the T&Cs, you'll most likely get to keep the miles, but may end up barred from future bonus cards if your account gets marked as a churner.

As a practice, when I open a card for the bonus, I make the required spend and meet any other T&Cs, and then keep the card open until they want to charge me a renewal fee. I'll even make occasionall charges, in the case of this card for things like travel, since it pays 2x miles on AA/US purchases, just to feed the beast. Sometimes they'll offer a worthwhile bonus, with or without an annual fee waiver to keep it open after that, but if not, I then cancel it with a clear conscience.

I can't say that if you make the annual fee and single charge payment and cancel immediately after the miles post that they WILL be charged back, but I've seen it happen with other cards and bonus offers in the past.
