HSBC--do they specialize in poor service?

Noticed that you could wait or be put on hold sometimes over 10 minutes and the end result is that the person you were speaking with gave you incorrect info.

Service issues

HSBC allowed some guy across the country to charge three laptops on my card and ship them to an address other than the billing address on record. I told them it was fraud and they reversed 2 of the 3 charges but claim walmart.com provided evidence that one charge was genuine. Despite numerous calls and written requests, neither walmart.com nor HSBC shared this "evidence" with me. I'm now enlisting some help from a prominent consumer advocate from a highly rated national TV program to take them on.

HSBC is a "TRANSFER BANK" only

Don't do other transaction.:p
HSBC, the mean is Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Cor. They can transfer between Hongkong and Shanghai 100 years ago. So, Forget other services! HSBC is little better than Western Union and Money Gram.

HSBC's important service is Global Transfer.

I have no complaints. I've been with HSBC for a few years now and upgraded to their Premier service about a year ago. Most of my dealings have been with their Canadian bank.

The Global Transfer capability is excellent, but I'm not sure how you can compare HSBC with Western Union—two completely different business models.

I'm sure they've gone global now and, if they're hopeless, why do so many other banks like UBS, RBS, ANZ, DBS, follow HSBC's doorstep in streamlining their brands?

The worst thing people do is to blindly go for a global bank in a location where the bank is a minority player and complain.

There are two HSBCs. The US one and the non-US one.

The US version of HSBC was called Household bank before HSBC bought them. Household specialized in sub-prime and other banking services for low income customers, with service level to match.

The non-US version of HSBC has invested tremendous amount of money in marketing and infrastructure to promote the brand. But for some weird reason they kept the old Household people around to destroy any progress they made in US.

It's true that HSBC acquired Household Finance in 2002, but HSBC has had retail banking operations in the USA for much longer. They bought a controlling interest in Marine Midland in 1980, acquired the remainder in 1987, but did not change the name until 1999. The branches that they operate in the Miami area are also descended from a commerial bank, not the consumer loan company.

I recently closed by HSBC Direct (merged to normal HSBC a few months ago) savings account recently. The interest rates were lackluster and the customer service is pitiful.

Having experience with HSBC and Citibank in 3 countries, I believe the correct answer to your question in "No, that's Citibank".

Well: one experience in favor of HSBC: they stopped a large potential / attempted fraudulent purchase in a different state while I had card in my possession.
