Copa Airlines flights

Sorry if this is in the wrong section! I am new here and I rarely every fly, so I am pretty lost when it comes to any information on this other than what I have tried to google.
I have seen a Copa Airlines flight from ft lauderdale, to bogota Colombia, with a 22 hour layover in Panama in between costing $177 versus a straight shot there being $300+

I would like to buy this ticket from Copa, to bogota and intentionally miss the connection to stay in Panama, and buy another one way ticket from Spirit straight home from Panama.

I don’t travel often and I really cannot afford a $700+ ticket, but I have to make my way over there for personal reasons.

Will this be an issue? From what I have read if you miss your connecting flight, they will cancel your whole trip home.. but will they do that if I have only bought a one way with Copa, and then my ticket back to ft lauderdale through a different airline? (Spirit)

I have searched, but can’t find a specific answer to my situation and would love some help, because I am extremely lost!
Thanks so much :)

Copa won't cancel your Spirit ticket, if that is what you are asking. They don't know about your Spirit flight.

Don't advertise to Copa that you are doing this, though, and certainly don't ask anyone at the airline services desk if this is OK.

And don’t take a checked bag as you risk it being checked right through (though with a 22 hour layover you will probably be able to persuade them to let you pick it up in Panama).

Yes, I found a lot of answers about risking losing the rest of your flight.. but nothing about if I were to take a separate company and flight home. I think I will book it then! Thank you for your help :)

I didn’t even think of that, I knew I wasn’t supposed to check bags but I will definitely try to now that you point that out! Will Copa charge me for missing my flight?

If they ask me for my onward ticket, should I not be showing them my flight home from Panama to Ft Lauderdale? Or that is ok?

Who is going to ask for your onward ticket? Copa? They sell one way tickets all the time. If you need to present one to immigration officers in Panama, you would show them your return flight on Spirit.

It really isn't Copa's business how you are getting home if you don't buy a round trip ticket. But if it is a concern, you can always buy a fully refundable one-way return ticket from Colombia and then cancel it after you've checked in.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this question:

I am traveling in J from RIO-PTY-BOG with an infant using Singapore Krislfyer award ticket in Dec. I am trying to book an infant ticket by paying 10% cash for an infant and I am being thrown back and forth between Singapore airlines (issuing carrier for adults) and Copa (operating flights). Finally someone told me the price but I need to pay it at the airport or sales office (none close to 100 miles to my home) and I need to pay the fare within 24 hours of reserving the ticket over the phone. I am worried about the price increasing before our trip and being J, it will be substancial damage if I do it at the airport just before flying. Any pointers?

Hi, my first time posting and not sure where I do that. My husband and I had booked flights on Copa traveling to the US from São Paulo bought this past winter for traveling in June. Since then we have learned that our daughter will be having major surgery the day before our return flight in July . I am needing to stay extra time with her and so called to change the flight. In addition to the $300 change fee they were adding another $1100 dollars for the changed flight! I would like to cancel the return flight and purchase a one way ticket on another airline. Is there a cancellation fee that may be applied? Or should I do a no show? Can they penalize my husband’s flight? When should I advise them? Thanks in advance.

Have you tried reading the fare rules?

Also, most of the Latin American I know come to the US to have their "major surgery". The only type that generally causes people to go in the opposite direction is the cosmetic kind.

Have you considered talking to your insurance company about this?

First of all, I'm sorry for the situation you are in - it must be a bit stressful.

The problem is the fare rules you agreed to when purchasing your ticket. It most likely said that you would have to pay a change fee plus the fare difference. You probably got a really good deal on the flight back than, and now the price is much more - so the rules say that you must pay the difference.

The fare rules will tell you if you can cancel or not - it would be best to ask Copa now.

If I understand correctly, you wish to abandon the return trip for 2 of the 3 passengers on the reservation. I don't believe this will be any problem at all for Copa. Maybe they will ask for the other two passengers at check-in, but all he has to respond is that they will check in later. They won't yank your husband off the plane and demand he pay a fee or cancel his ticket. You might consider calling Copa and separating the reservation, but I can't think of any scenario where that would be beneficial, except for some sort of irrops or something where the unattending parties cause a problem some how.

Disclaimer: I only have one experience with this. My wife once dropped a return trip in favor of travel to a 3rd city. No repercussions whatsoever.

I'm assuming that they are also looking for a refund. However, if they are not - then you are absolutely correct.
