Thanks for the information. I booked a new (cheaper) flight with another airline that was one way and refundable within 24 hours before I called Copa again. This time Copa was very helpful and only charged me the change flight fee and rebooked me in the same flight pattern. This was totally reasonable and much appreciated. So I canceled the new flight. I think that Copa was better and it helped having used the first half of the round trip already plus calling from within the US to make the change. Perhaps this is true when making changes to only half of one’s trip? So thank you for the responses. My problem was solved.
