COPA Biz Class (737-800)????
Sorry, but I never even heard of COPA before researching our next vacation! We were looking at Peru (LIM) but upon further research, we decided to go on a 15 day cruise that leaves from Rio. I like it because it ends in the states (not to mention we really enjoy cruising).
We will fly to LAX from SMF and catch a flight on COPA to GIG. I can get two one-way Biz class for just over $1,000 each. I think that is pretty good. However, upon further research, and from the lack of detailed information on their own website, I'm guessing COPA's biz class is probably like flying United. I realize the Biz Class we had on Qantas where the beds are 100% horizontal and 2 levels of seats....well, it was nice but I doubt we'll have something like that for a very long time. But since the website doesn't mention anything at all about the seats, the best I could find was on seatguru which stated 38" pitch, 20.5" width, and 7.5 recline. Heck, I think Unitied seats in First Class reclined more than that. But I'm just guessing....I know it is nothing like LAN...those seats also were 100% horizontal....but I would like to know a little bit more about COPA in biz class and their website is not providing any information whatsoever. Any info would be appreciated....I am glad it is on the 737 and not the ERJ-190.... I don't have too high expectations (trust me, if they don't even show you the seats on their own website--they are probably just slightly better than economy!). But it would be nice to know a little more. Dawn |
Seats look like domestic F in the US. US or UA would be the most accurate examples.

I myself have never flown COPA but my brother and his Fiance have many times. I asked him and they said it's similar to CO's planes about 5 years ago. so don't expect AVOD but expect a decently comfortable seat with decent service. it's not all that long of a flight, compared to my usual 10+ hour international flights. Just don't expect SQ's service.

Thanks....

It's still worth $1k each (one way)....we are going smack dab in the middle of Carnival so I think we are pretty lucky to have it as an option. Thanks again. Dawn |
I looked at some pricing for around Carnival and I think you got a good deal. Be sure to report back once the flights are completed so others can get recent confirmation on hard & soft products. If you go in expecting decent and get decent to good service it should be a nice start to your vacation.

Some notes from my latest weekend with Copa are here. And here's what I did on a similar layover in March. If you want me to get you in touch with the driver we used in PTY I can do that. He was pretty good. |
3 hour layover....

Actually CO is the best example since it is nearly identical. The older CM planes have the same seats as CO does on their older 738s. I like the CM product: decent food up front and reasonably comfortable with the option for a stopover in PTY if you're looking for a fun diversion. That said, it is a VERY different product from the long-haul C seats that CO, UA and others offer to deep South America. And the timing from LAX to GIG means a redeye LAX-PTY, a 12 hour layover and then another redeye to GIG. That's going to beat you up pretty good.

He was pretty good. The schedule I am looking at has us getting into PTY at 5:58 p.m. and back out to GIG @ 9:12 p.m. Plus, since we are going Biz class, we'll have access to the lounge in PTY, which I hear is pretty decent. Hopefully, we can catch a few winks between 9:12 p.m. and 6:22 a.m. when it lands. Trust me, I'm not expecting anything like Qantas. I think it may be very similar to the "First Class" we took on Delta when we went to Rome. I didn't even know there were seats that lay flat until we were on Qantas (I mean I knew, but I didn't think I'd ever get to lay in one). Economy is $700 (one way)....so I think we really scored. I have it on hold until August 24th....I am just trying to see if I can get the JW Marriott for one more night (March 6th) before I purchase the airfare but it is highly unlikely since it is Carnival (and I'm so very lucky we scored the JW Marriott for the 7th and 8th!!!!). CM has two flights LAX-PTY per day now. So you are right.

The lounge in PTY is the Presidents Club there. Decent enough with some cheese & crackers and an open (and tended) bar. |
Okay.....

Nice. That second LAX-PTY flight is definitely new and reduces the pain quite a bit, though I'd recommend doing the 12-hour transit one direction if you can and want to see a bit of PTY. It is a fun town and easy to see a few things in a half-day stopover.
No, it will not be anything like that. It will be like domestic F seats. No extended recline. No leg rest. Nothing close to a typical international business class product. The lounge in PTY is the Presidents Club there. Decent enough with some cheese & crackers and an open (and tended) bar. Geez...that long of a flight and they don't even have a foot rest. Wow. Okay....lowering my expectations here even more. I'll think of it as a really nice Southwest Airlines flight--ha!!! Actually, I meant Domestic First Class seating.....the flight we had "First Class" to Rome was nothing special....I didn't know "special" until we went 1st class on Qantas.... Fortunately, the different between economy and biz on this flight is $300. If it were twice as much, then we may have to rethink it...but the small amount more is so little that it is a no brainer. I guess we can expect plastic knives and fork then...ugh. Oh well...at least we get to travel in general. Thanks....great information. Dawn |
Copa uses silverware even in coach.
I have just flown them for the first time CNF-PTY-BOG-BAQ-PTY-CNF in coach and found the planes clean, service OK, web check-in easy and best of all, on-time departures and arrivals. |
I a considering doing a " sort of" MR with Copa in the upcoming days...
They have some unbelieveable cheap fares ex-GRU to some South American destinations. I intended on going to these places anyway, and why fly non-stop if I can take a huge detour, pay half the price and get some 15K award (but not status) miles to my FB account?:D |
Need to lower expectations....
Guess I need to lower my expectations even further.
I did get a good price ($1k)....especially given that we didn't get raked over the coals for only purchasing one way tickets and also the economy was $700. However, not only do we not have footrests, there are no individual TVs (ugh) but the worst of it is that my laptop won't have a POWER outlet! This is really a bummer. I'm fine anywhere/anytime, so long as I have my laptop. Oh well....there is that executive lounge in Panama City! I need to keep reminding myself of that...not to mention, we are going for a once in a lifetime event (for us anyway)....Carnival in Rio! Thanks all.... Dawn |
