If the outbound is on a weekday (or even Sunday) I wouldn't chance that connection. YMMV.

Two thoughts..
SFO-EWR usually arrived about 15mins early, but when are you looking to fly? Current schedule has CO449 typically as 11:20-8:00 which would totally mess with your connection if it was "on time."
As for actually connecting at EWR, you're going from the 80's to the 130's, which is clear across the C terminal. It's not bad, but it's a walk. 48mins should be fine, but any delay would be bad.

If at all possible book the earlier SFO-EWR. The connection is just fine if there are no delays, but that is a big risk to take when there are no other options for getting to BOM that night.

There are two earlier flights. If the difference in price is extortionate, how about buying the cheap one now and then doing same-day-change for $50 to the earlier flight?

The big risk is weather closing slowing down things into EWR.
I was on CO 619 yesterday, TPA-EWR. Schededuled Take off was 3 PM with a 6 PM arrival. A lot of international connecting passengers on board.
A storm showed up on the East coast and the 3 PM departure became 5:10 PM departure. The captain announced it would be 2 hours and 2 minutes. EXACTLY 3 hours later, at 8:10 we landed. We then sat in the bullpen for 25 minutes due to 'Ramp Congestion' and got to the gate at roughly 8:35.
I would guess the vast majority of connecting passengers did not make it.
This is the big risk and is highly variable.
