I once forgot to carry my driver's license at ORD.....UA let me check in my luggage by looking at my company ID. TSA let me through with a secondary security screening (pat down et al.)

I once went through security with an expired driver's license and although they complained they let me through (I just discovered I had lost my passport that morning, hence the use the expired driver's license as my only id -- worked at EWR and ORD).

Heh, did Costco get a bailout too? I'd understand a GM ID or an AIG ID being considered a government ID, but a Costco card?

Are the SFO folks still "TEAM SFO" contractors?

Well that's just scary... the feds relying on Costco to issue ID's?

And no... no bailout for Costco :p

TSA is required to accept it until 1 year after the expiration date.

There are some states that still take your driver's license when giving you a traffic ticket (to be returned to you when you pay it)... IL is one example. I'd assume the TSA has to have a procedure for such situations?

FOUND IT!

In the dust and hay and sheep droppings on the floor of a ewe lamb shed, where I dropped it yesterday AM. Couldn't find it searching for it yesterday afternoon, but there it was this AM when the lambs were let out, dirty but intact.

The thing I'm taking away from this experience is the suggestion up-thread to scan and keep accessible images of essential ID. And also, an understanding from other posters that you can get it done if need be.

Lost my wallet on way to airport in Boston, MA, summer 2008.

I keep a pdf of my passport on phone (and have it available gmail and with office secretary).

Stil l had my plat elite card, credit card, and business cards.

The continental rep got a state trooper that was fond of her to help.
TSA had a form to fill out and sign. Had to give personal info (address, mothers maiden name, etc). Think they did a soft pull on credit?

PITA, took about 35 minutes.
Without the PDF of passport, they said they wouldn't have helped.

Apparently they don't know that at LGA. Got the secondary as my license was 3 days expired. So did the guy ahead of me (also had an expired license).

Because our identities change as soon as our drivers licenses expire.

Not quite. There are many other resources out there that have plenty of biographical data on you other than the credit bureaus. I believe that the TSA/DHS contracts with LexisNexis and their various databases to verify data about you in such scenarios, not the credit bureaux.

Seems about right...The ID checkers at Costco seem at least as qualified as those at the airport.

I thought it was a Ralphs id? At any rate, that movie is awsome. . .

Of course. Dominick's is Chicago.

As others have mentioned, the policy is that you are allowed to go through if you don't have any ID (subject to secondary screening), but you aren't allowed to refuse to show it. Others have linked to articles discussing the policy, but I thought you might want to see it first hand from the TSA: http://www.tsa.gov/press/happenings/...uirements.shtm

This change will apply exclusively to individuals that simply refuse to provide any identification or assist transportation security officers in ascertaining their identity.

This new procedure will not affect passengers that may have misplaced, lost or otherwise do not have ID but are cooperative with officers. Cooperative passengers without ID may be subjected to additional screening protocols, including enhanced physical screening, enhanced carry-on and/or checked baggage screening, interviews with behavior detection or law enforcement officers and other measures.
Like all TSA policies, it seems to be subject to the mood of the particular agent you encounter
