Explain this upgrade logic

This confuses me, but maybe I am missing something. Hopefully someone can explain this.

Elites can not be EUA'd on a reward ticket.

But Gold/Plat Elites can add a companion who is on a reward ticket to the upgrade list. I have successfully had this occur.

How can they allow a companion upgrade on reward ticket but not do EUA for the person who actually holds the status?

Thoughts?

That is not supposed to happen...

That explains my confusion. I won't expect it to happen again.

Impressive that you somehow got it to happen though!

It's a fluke.

It does confuse some agents - when I went to Vegas for my anniversary, I booked myself a revenue ticket (for DEQM) and then a reward ticket. I flipped off the upgrade so we could sit together - but the computer ran EUA anyway and I had to call to get back into Y. At the airport, the agent saw I hadn't been put on the upgrade list and offered to add me, and I told her it was so we could sit together. She said, "Oh, but I could add him too!"

I pointed out that he was on a reward, and she didn't think that would be a problem - until her supervisor came over and assured us that it would.

But this was the same agent and supervisor that gave a non-elite a free day-of-departure upgrade, so clearly they know how to override or side-step some rules. :P

I was in the PC when I had my companion added to the upgrade list. I handed the agent my boarding pass and my companions. All I asked was can you add them to the first class upgrade list. A minute later they handed the boarded passes back and that was it. Upon boarding my companion was upgraded.

One off

You were the lucky beneficiary of a fluke. Technically the PC agent should have declined to add your companion to the list, but it happened anyway. Apparently there is not a system function to prevent pax on reward tickets from being listed (or an experienced agent knows how to override it.) If it happens again, buy a lottery ticket because it's your lucky day.
