Question about EUA process...
 

Hello all,

I checked my account for a upgrade on a short segment (BOS-EWR) this morning connecting to a non-upgradeable EWR-HNL segment for Tuesday. I noticed it did not EUA within the 5 day period (which happens more than not), but I was curious if my "non-upgradable" segment would cause any issues with upgrading the segment BOS-EWR which is allowed.

I called Elite line and they said it should auto-upgrade. That said, for whatever reason it did not.

I did ask if "R" class was showing availablity and she said Yes. I believe "R" is the upgradable fare bucket so I'm curious if I should have been automatically upgraded or not?

Also, which I kind of knew, I asked if there was anyway they could kick off a "upgrade" process to see if would upgrade and they said they can't do that..

There should be no problem with your EUA. I often fly DCA-IAH-XXX, where XXX is a Continental Express destination and get my upgrade, even when I was a gold.

There is no way to expedite the EUA process. All you can do is wait.

Not exactly, after all there is the coveted row 12, which--as you may recall--started a huge brouhaha after Cigarman saw a "man of the cloth" getting assigned to this row before himself and led to the plats-only rule for exit row seating, which was then loosened to include golds after much protestation...

If you want a plane on which every seat is elite, there is none better than the Beech 1900...every seat is a wnidow seat every seat is an aisle seat...

In some cases CO will have R available during the day for mileage upgrades and then zero it out at the EUA window, only to restore it shortly thereafter. They are trying to sell the miles option.

Thanks -- that could be what is happening -- though I'd be shocked if anyone would waste their miles to upgrade a BOS-EWR (206 miles :) ) segment...

I looked at F, and it is relatively open (13 open out of 20) so I'm sure I'll get it...

Then I'll connect to a 9 hour EWR-HNL in coach because I'm too cheap to upgrade with miles :D

The best $325 you'll spend on that trip (assuming you are elite) is called REVUP. Call the elite line at T-24 from the BOS departure and ask to upgrade using the REVUP program. If there is Z inventory you get to ride up front for just the $325 payment - no miles required. It'll even clear the BOS upgrade if there is Z inventory on that flight. Just did this last Sunday EWR-HNL. I had to tell CMH how to do it, but it was worth it. Today's flight HNL-EWR was a no-go. I just suffered in coach because there was no Z inventory.

PS. if you aren't elite it is $450 and you can only do it 2 hours ahead of your BOS - EWR segment.

That's good advice -- and not bad price considering I don't have use mileage.

I'm traveling with a colleague so I'll have to see if he would want to do that as well. (He's gold).

What mileage category would you earn under if you did this? With DEQM, it could be a big difference if you originally booked in say T and got Z miles for the REVUP fee.

Earning is based on the original fare purchased, not on the Z fare for the upgrade.

Would you say that at T-3 when the EUA runs again those wait listed should clear if they do not sell the miles option?

I have had the miles option on my itinerary for sometime now and it still remains for my flight tomorrow DTW-IAH, while i sit #1 on the wait list.

As a silver, I know upgrades aren't easy, but I was hoping because it is a Saturday flight and it looks virtually wide open; I assumed it would be a slam dunk for me.

If it's that wide open, I would take yourself off the mileage waitlist and hope the EUA works its magic. Especially if you have a good seat would be ok with it if you didn't get upgraded. But if the UG is that important you would virtually be assured of getting it if you used miles.
