Is this the way CO serves its cheeseburger....

flew IAH-EWR tonite. The cheeseburger came with bun glued to a plate of melted cheese. On the bun was the hamburger with maybe 1/5th of its surface covered with the cheese and the remainder as a melted pool in the plate. The top of the bun was stuck to the pool of melted cheese. I noticed a couple other folks and their cheeseburgers all seemed to be presented the same way. Is this typical?

sdm1130 Apr 30, 2009 10:36 pm

Unfortunately, yes it is typical.

One of the FAs can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe it is a result of the cheeseburger being delivered on the plate (and therefore needing to be heated in the oven while on the plate) rather than being delivered in a separate heating container.

that bowl of soup was pretty messy too, it came this way....but it was tasty(the soup), the burger nothing to write home about.

That is my understanding as well. Also comes with the territory of being frozen, unfrozen, and shuffled around an airport ramp all day before making it on your flight. Stuff gets moved.

With that said, I actually enjoy the cheeseburger.

Looks familiar :D It tasted better than it looked, and the "three bean" soup tasted more liked split pea with ham, but was very good regardless.

Steph3n Apr 30, 2009 10:46 pm

btw the business first cheeseburger was presented better(this was a snack only too!):

Sounds about right; which is why I avoid the cheeseburger in F. I actually would prefer the cheeseburger from coach with the fixins from the F tray. :)

KNRG Apr 30, 2009 11:10 pm

Doesn't the coach burger come in a plastic bag? Makes a wonderful hand warmer if i recall correctly.

yes it does, only had that once thankfully, it was a bit 'humid' inside there making a very wet bun.

whiteknuckles Apr 30, 2009 11:16 pm

At least you didn't get the chicken burger. ^

Please say it ain't so.....split pea soup with HAM??? Is this thread going to turn into one about piggy flu too??? :D

Weatherboy May 1, 2009 5:17 am

And this is why CO needs to drop that horrific cheeseburger from it's line-up. You have a 100% chance of getting a soggy/burnt bun, a puddle of cheese, and a horribly cooked beef-like patty in domestic F when this is served. :td:

kingalien May 1, 2009 5:48 am

I like the cheeseburger actually. Yes, it is served just like the pics above, ultra messy. When the burger is served, I immediately lift the burger and bun off the plate so it doesn't soak in the cheese and get stuck on the plate. On the bright side, most of the cheese is already on the plate so a little less going into my stomach.

IAH-OIL-TRASH May 1, 2009 6:31 am

I like the cheeseburger

Had the forward cabin cheeseburger last Sunday IAH-MIA. It looked exactly like the posted photo. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.I could have eaten another. And the corn chowder wasn't bad either. Had to place the burger on my napkin to adsorb some of the moisture off the bottom, but hey, it's a freakin' airplane at 30k. It was a lot better than the turkey and salami plate on the way back (crackers in the soup bowl but no soup), and miles ahead of what Caribbean Air put in front of us in 1st during the four segments I had to endure with them on that same trip...

+1. It always looks like that and I love it just the same. I just use a fork and knife to eat it.

CALflyboi May 1, 2009 7:05 am

This is one of the reasons that I used to hate serving this thing. These burgers have 2 slices of cheese. I take the bottom slice off, leaving one on top of the patty.( Yes, I use plastic gloves!) This way, the bottom bun is not glued to the plate, and they turn out much better, IMO! I have sent a suggestion in to reduce one slice of cheese, but I'm so far, no change.

Tummy May 1, 2009 7:09 am

I've tried the cheeseburger a couple times and it just looks totally unappetizing. The taste is ok, but like others said the bun gets soaked. I would like it with more ketchup.

Last night I had the Jambalaya and it wasn't bad, if a little bland.

I watched a very elegant looking lady try to eat the cheeseburger and it dripped grease on her Chanel blouse.

How often do they change the menu? I think it's been the same for a while now.

A snazzy pic of the BF burger from a trip report...

Though I don't understand the point of serving this at 6am local time.

I will never get used to American airlines serving pizza and hamburgers in premium classes. Seems incredibly cheap and tacky to me - but maybe it's just a cultural thing which I don't get. Can you imagine being served a hamburger like that on SQ (!)

I find it more bizarre that it's breakfast on a red eye to europe. The other courses look normal and proper.

I think NH has a hamburger on their snack menu. I was a bit surprised.

pptp May 1, 2009 8:16 am

The burger is a little difficult to get right. By the time you've cooked it enough to be hot all the way through, the cheese is over melted. The domestic ones are pre-plated and have to be stacked sideways like that in order to fit in the ovens and you have to sheild the cheese from the foil covering the plate otherwise the entire slice would stick to it. Not sure why the BF ones are presented so different. They might be stacked upright since, by the time they need to be heated there's a lot less going on in those ovens -- plenty of room for the double height.

vatraveler May 1, 2009 8:23 am

Hard on top, soggy on bottom, and pool of cheese. What's not to like?

pptp May 1, 2009 8:41 am

BTW, when offered as a choice, they amost always sell out quickly. Go figure.

I liked the BF burger a lot, the mustard was ^

Just not fond of the domestic puddle of cheese :)
I would not like it was a main meal on BF, but as a snack it is fine.

Even though I often need to reconstruct it at delivery, it's my second favorite burger after In-N-Out.

I wish I got the bean and ham soup - all of my flights in the past couple months were either tomato basil or corn chowder. My two least favorite options.

If SQ served a burger, it would be the best damn burger in the air. And I would have it, if the opportunity presented itself.

It wasn't. Reading the review it was the arrival snack on CDG-EWR.

Really? Last couple of flights I've been on, when paired with the chicken salad, I was the only one ordering the burger in the first three rows.

colpuck May 1, 2009 9:09 am

I had the cheeseburger for the first time on Wednesday. It was an epic experience. It did look just like the original picture.

In my experience, the burger very often is served like that. I just had it again last weekend and it looked excatly as it does in the photo.

Not in my experience. I heard many complaints about the burger from fellow travelers. The other choice, whatever it was, seemed to run out first.

Breakfast on a flight to Europe? Really? Every time I've flown BF to Europe we've been served breakfast food at breakfast. Granted this was out of IAH — maybe it's different out of EWR? In any case, a cheeseburger is an odd choice at breakfast.

It was served on CDG-EWR, not EWR-CDG.

It's closer when it's against the salad but when it's up against say, the jambalaya, it seems to win all of the time. That's my experience at least.

On my flight last weekend, the jambalaya was winning hands down against the burger. IIRC, I was the only one in the first three rows to order the burger. I was surprised, as the burger always seems to be somewhat popular.

But it's listed on the menu as the last thing served as "refreshment" for a flight that arrives at 7:30am. As far as i can tell, it's the same both ways for EWR-CDG and it serves as breakfast for CO56 according to co.com

Anyone been on Co56 lately?

Yikes !

That first pic was scary. I wonder what the Congress of [fast food] Chefs would have to say about this.

Or how many expletives would Gordon Ramsay shout if one of his aspiring contestants tried to serve this!

Glad I'm a vegetarian.

Hmmm...have you taken a look at some of the vegetarian special meals??
I love vegetarian Indian food but some of it looks a little um...odd (the spinach with the cheese in it).
Once again proving that something can taste good despite its looks and that taste is so subjective that CO is smart not to be running around in circles trying constantly to "fix" their menus.

Peninsula May 1, 2009 2:29 pm

In the past two years, I've noticed that Continental's food has become much less healthy. My hunch is that by loading the food up with fat, they can serve less of it (fat makes you feel full more than protein/carbs).
