Cuba??

I'm somewhat surprised there hasn't been a discussion started on the new travel ops opening up to Cuba. While I realize it won't affect the majority of us, there hasn't been boo squat mentioned in the employee newsletter about the lifting of travel restrictions.

I would imagine American would at some point offer something out of Miami, Spirit out of Ft. Lauderdale, etc. Outside of the obvious enclave in S. Florida, are there any other concentrations of Cuban Americans around the U.S? Would think that CALs southern presence and strength would somehow provide some new markets.

Thoughts??

Perhaps CO will filter them to COPA???

I would like to go to Cuba but the one angle I could use is not as valid as before. As an educator it was easier to get a visa to go there!

There are a fair amount of Cubans in the Houston area and within Texas, quite wealth ones it seems (one even ran for mayor of Houston). Along with connecting traffic, I am sure a daily flight from IAH to HAV would work eventually.

Ciao,

Copa does fly to HAV now. As far as new services once the embargo does fall, MIA, NYC, WAS are no-brainers.

My previous wager of November 2008 for commencement of IAH-HAV service appears to be off by a few months

Indeed, but the embargo isn't falling anytime soon.

There will be more demand for VFR charters, which is what currently operate today, and I can see AA increasing frequency or putting bigger planes on the flights they already operate. I thought that at one point CO operated some charters on the MIA-HAV route, too, but maybe not any more.

So the charters will increase and eventually commercial service will be established and EVERYONE will try to get in on it. I would expect some heavy bilateral restrictions on route frequencies when that time comes.

Doesn't CO already operate charters between MIA and HAV? In the future, I could definitely see flights from IAH and EWR.

Once a week I think.

Everyone will try to get in on it, but only certain carriers are going to have notable success wtih it because of hub locations/ethnic concerns. I can see EWR-HAV being a tone more lucrative than MSP-HAV, for example.

Sure, but there is no airline with a hub in MSP anymore. ;)

DL will absolutely establish service from ATL, or at least they'll try.

I really think that any dropping of the embargo and establishment of service is going to require a new bilateral, and that means providing slots for Cubana to fly their Russian rust buckets into US airports. That could be an interesting issue to see negotiated.

Union City, NJ one of the largest concentrations outside of Cuba and Miami. A nonstop out of EWR might be worth it a few days a week to them.
