1 of the "Elite" group checking in...

Pics to come.

rockdoc Feb 7, 2009 10:51 am

CO is obviously trying to segregate the trouble makers from the rest of the group!

vsevolod4 Feb 7, 2009 10:52 am

compensation?

Only a group of 14 FTers would ask how many OnePass miles we will get for this 150 foot 1 hour "flight"

channa Feb 7, 2009 10:58 am

Anyone call WE CARE yet to hear them say, "The elevator ride was complimentary, therefore you are not entitled to compensation."

vsevolod4 Feb 7, 2009 11:04 am

Seriously, we're still stick, 14 FTers and 2 very professional Continental employees stick between the 15th and 16th floors. We're becoming great friends!

This should make for some interesting stories tonight. Hope you guys get out of there soon.

mht_flyer Feb 7, 2009 11:08 am

We've been here a hour, but the repair folks are finally here!

After 68 minutes we got left out. Kudos to the CO team and thanks to the company store which kindly comped our purchases

Indeed. That was not expected nor required. Class through and through.

Excellent... now we've established the standard compensation for an elevator hold.
:p

That was about the same amount of time we were "stuck" in an aluminum tube this morning, but we had a view, AVOD and champagne. ;)

You're lucky it wasn't in the Delta headquarters. You would have been charged a close-in ticketing fee, fuel surcharge, a standby fee, and a partner fee plus the triple tier award chart!

Make me glad I went on the Inflight Training tour.

An hour trapped in an elevator. Yikes.

Why not? Just imagine to be there with the right lady and no outside disturbance for an hour....

crnk Feb 7, 2009 4:58 pm

It was a blast. Pardon the joke, but it seems like we made a real BONEHEAD move by loading the whole group onto an elevator at once.

*fyi, Bonehead was also one present in the elevator.

Nice to get to know everyone a little bit better, though!

me4yankees Feb 7, 2009 5:26 pm

I was one of those stuck! It was very warm, but the technology abounded!

Now let's not exaggerate, Jaimito. The partner fee has not yet been announced for WorldPerks members. That only applies to SkyMiles members.

Facevalue Feb 8, 2009 7:33 am

Seriously.....didn't Mark B say publicly that he would compensate the elevator gang 100 miles times the number floor they were stuck on?

I thought I heard Smisek said that at Q&A - 16th floor.

And certainly lucky you weren't at the Sandcastle (US HDQ)...they would have charged you an elevator repair fee...:D:D:D

Bookexp Feb 8, 2009 5:02 pm

Smoky told me the elevator story at Saturday night's party.
I am sure this is the real "mystery tour". CO planned this all alone....:D

TECHNICALLY, we were between the 15th and 16th.
We had about half of the 15th floor door when we opened the elevator, and about 6-12" of 16 visible at the top.
They came to figure it all out on the 15th floor, but when all was said and done, the cab moved up to the 16th and we got out there.

Yup, I heard him say it to. I'm sure somebody must have posted THAT on You Tube.

me4yankees Feb 8, 2009 7:17 pm

I heard him say something about miles, too, so if I receive any, I will post!

They did take all of our names while we were stuck, but the assumption was that was for insurance/liability purposes. So we will see if they use that list to award us Elevator Qualification Miles! :D

Djlawman Feb 8, 2009 7:17 pm

Hey, when 15 of us spent 1 hour 40 mins. in an elevator in the Waldorf Astoria about 15 years ago, we all (eventually, after a mass meeting with the hotel GM) got free suites for a weekend. (There were other complications -- it's a LONG story.)

So, free purchases? not sure if that's enough compensation.

Delta does charge their own elites it, for CO itins. I never mentioned NW. :)

Stuck in the elevator with one great crew!!!!

:D:D:D

I need to say that the comradarie and coolness of all who were trapped with me in the elevator was fantastic!!

I hate to think what it would have been like if we had 15 of the daily employees (not CAL) of Smith Street in that elevator.

When it started to get a little too hot and humid (after about 10 minutes), I was able to slide both sides of the inner door open to start an acceptable breeze. Every time another elevator went by we got a cool blast.

We were dead center between 15 and 16 and although there appeared to be an accessible release for the hallway door, we decided not to try to open it.

We were told that water would be available when we got out but when the elevator moved up and the door finally opened on the 16th floor, the hallway was empty. They were waiting on the 15th. About 3 minutes later another elevator opened and we had our water from Chelsea.

We were later told that the problem was not with possibly an overload (elevator was rated at 3500 pounds plus undoubtedly a safety factor of probably 20%) but that a tilt switch was tripped when too many people were near the front door. A really dumb situation compounded by the fact that there was no elevator number posted in the elevator to tell security

I will say that if this ever happens to you, and you are not with a bunch of cool headed FTers, you insist that the outside person call the fire department to bring a hydraulic "JAWS" system in addition to calling the elevator company. Then if anyone panics, the fire department can easily open both the inner and outer doors in a few minutes if the elevator company is delayed as this one was for an hour..

The First Annual CO Elevator Do? :)

JC1120 Feb 9, 2009 7:25 am

both my parents were stuck in that elevator, though I'm not sure they knew anything about the comped purchases at the CO store (they didn't come home with any goodies).

I hope they get the miles mentioned ("100xthe floor number" i believe was the quip).

I chatted with them for a bit - they seemed to be really enjoying the event (aside from being stuck in an elevator with the rest of us, of course ;)).

cerealmarketer Feb 9, 2009 11:31 am

I've got a 20 floor ride at home and 45 at work each day and will never get in a 100 pct packed elevator again -- not because being stuck was so lousy -- have had worse experiences on the tarmac at ewr -- but because it would be with a bunch of let's say less level headed folks. and no pre ride champagne!

great group to be 'stuck' with and our continental hosts in the elevator were nothing but professional.

Now I wish I was on that tour. Being compensated with miles is worth an hour being stuck!

Stuck in Smith St. elevator

Three other things I forgot to mention in my above post:

If you do open the hall door and you exit downward make sure that there is help to keep anyone from falling backward down the open shaft.

Also you must push open both sides of the inner door simultaneously.

Third, if you can not get the inner door open for air, boost someone up to knock out some ceiling tiles.
