764 at AUS!

So, I'm walking through the concourse at AUS, happen to glance over to gate 18 and to my surprise - a 767-400, the nose almost hitting the glass wall of the terminal. Turns out it is a charter for the UT football team to SAN as charter flight 1909. Just thought it was really cool to see out there. All the CO employees had orange UT shirts on and UT banners decorating the gate. The plane is going to SAN, then back to IAH (not sure if it's deadheading or a revenue flight SAN-IAH), then on to AMS tonight.

Happens to be one day that I don't have my camera on me to add this to A.net!

This afternoon's SAN-IAH shows 738 equipment, so perhaps deadheading? What a waste!

Maybe that's why I got a call saying the 7:40 PM IAH - AMS was delayed tonight.

The return is CO 1943 SAN -IAH departing SAN at 1500 local time.

This is the same aircraft going on to AMS.

IIRC there was a 767-400 there 2(?) years ago under similar circumstances - I saw the team heading out to California to win the Rose Bowl. You're right - there isn't a lot of space round by CO's gates for a widebody - they had to push it a long way before they could turn it round.

FWIW I've also seen a C17 parked near the cargo sheds.

It's a shame nobody the market doesn't support longhaul flights out of AUS - the runway is plenty long enough, but today it's hard to think of it as Bergstrom "International".

In the summer of 2006 I was on a 764 AUS-IAH, which had been sent from IAH as a replacement for a 738 that went mx. IIRC, we were at gate 16 and we had to use a step stool to step up into the plane's door, because they couldn't get the jetway to match up with the airplane door.

There are a few flights to Mexico from there.

I've witnessed multiple ANG and USAF aircraft doing touch-and-go's there as well overnighting for airshows. Makes me love the AUS airport.

I wonder if that means AA sends some widebodies occasionally to CLL?
