etiquette?

Hi everybody,

On the return leg of my last trip, I finally earned elite status on CO. I've not flown since, but I am planning on taking a trip this weekend, and others soon. I was wondering what the proper etiquette was to see about getting upgraded to FC? Do I simply "wait and see" when I get to the gate? Or do they actually pull people up front once everybody has boarded the plane? Any tips would be great appreciated. Thanks much!

A few different things may happen:

Sometimes you will get an email from Continental telling you that you've been upgraded with your new seat assignment

Sometimes you will check in and find that you've been upgraded

Occasionally a flight attendent will come to you and tell you that you can move up after you've taken your coach seat

So there's no need to wait until everyone else has boarded the plane

ONLY after the gate agent has brought a new boarding pass to the FA. Don't ask the FA's to upgrade you. We are not permitted to do that and can even lose our jobs for doing it. Upgrades are the sole responsibility of the gate agents.(Yes, I know there are FA's who have moved people up without knowing who is next on the list.) You can always inquire with the agents working the flights about you chances of an upgrade.

And they may or may not check, but will give you an answer anyway.

Watch specific stations (like DFW) that have known issues with lazy GA's letting F seats fly empty. You may have to harp on them a bit.

As a fellow silver-leveler, I wish you all the luck in the world with your upgrades. I remember back before CO handed out Silvers like a drug dealer handing out free samples to hook the next addict, I used to upgrade on at least 75% of my flights going through IAH.

Now I fly through IAH and EWR mostly and my percentage of upgrades is below 10%. Oh well...

At least I don't have to wait in the long lines at Terminal 2 in Phoenix...

And speaking of T2 Continental, thanks for moving from that beautiful, big, convenient PHX T4 to the small, dirty, cramped and third-world worthy T2. I was beginning to think you guys might care... *sniff*

Make sure that your one pass number is attached to your reservation and the EUA should run. If available you will catch the ug.

Funny how things change. I remember what a treat T2 was when I flew on an AA DC-10 PHX-JFK. Back in the summer of 1976. At least T2 had the jetways. T1 was stair boarding at the time.

Back then, there was no parking garage, the floors were terazzo (with the city seal embedded in the center), and you could walk to all of the rental cars.

If you are flying with a non-elite on the same reservation, be sure to call CO a day or two before your departure and request that your reservation be "split". Otherwise, no u/g.

Continental had to move because they were getting gates from America West. And since they were no longer in a committed relationship, they split up the silverware, and HP kept the house.
