When do they shut down?

Should Rita hit Houston, how long can ops continue before the system must be shut down?

They shut down when conditions become unfavorable or dangerous. They ALWAYS err on the side of caution, but certainly before the rain squalls of the outer bands hit...

The flip side, how soon can IAH be open again... I'm sched to fly back to IAH Friday evening right now...I'm thinking of moving my flight to a thursday flight, arriving mid-late afternoon...

For those concerned about flights this weekend, it looks like CO will allow changes due to weather:

The Bahamas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas
Due to Hurricane Rita, Continental is providing the option to reschedule or reroute your travel once, without a penalty, if you are ticketed to/from/through The Bahamas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas for travel between Monday, September 19, 2005 and Monday, September 26, 2005. Travel must be re-scheduled or re-issued by October 3, 2005. If your flight has been cancelled, a refund to the original form of payment can be requested.

Travel must be completed by the original validity dates specified on the ticket and changes must be confirmed in the same booking class as the original ticket. Please call Continental Airlines reservations at 1-800-525-0280 or one of Continental's other reservations numbers for assistance.

Yes, you are allowed to reroute or rebook without penalty HOWEVER I just got off the phone with the elite desk and they said for me to reroute on the flight thru EWR [same day, this friday] it has to be in the smae class of service which it was not and he said i had to pay the fare difference. When I protested Continental's web site did not say that he read me the rules over the phone and it did sya to change it must be in the same fare class  i think I will call back and get a second opinion.

They should be happy that customers are trying to rerourte themselves before the problems hit. They'll then have a lot less to worry about when they do. I'm scheduled on a PHL-IAH-SEA trip Friday night with a return Sunday. I guess it's time to call...

That rez calls out for immediate rebooking -- both ways, I think! I wonder how well CAL will do repositioning aircraft and flight crews if IAH is down for a couple of days (I don't want to think of a scenario beyond that). I'd have more confidence in them than any other airline I know, but it will be interesting to see if the rest of the systems "works" without IAH. If you've already got a weekend ticket and don't want to cancel, I guess you become the guinea pig.

I would keep trying. I would think that it would be to COs benefit to move as many people away from IAH as possible for this Fri/Sat....but what do I know.

The latest forecast is for 125 knot winds in 36-48 hours, catagory 5 is a "Distinct Possibility"

I tried to rebook but they only let you rebook *once* for free and there was no "L" inventory on the return. They'll only waive the fare class restrictions after the flight you're scheduled on is cancelled and most of the return flights are already just about sold out. To make matters worse I have a PHL-MHT routing on CO Sunday night a few hours after my scheduled return to PHL from SEA. Right now it looks as if the Friday night outbound to SEA flights will likely be running, but I have no idea how I'll get to PHL/MHT/BOS on Sunday or Monday. I *MUST* be in BOS on Tuesday morning.

Probably. Still waiting to see which way the wind blows, but if it's anywhere close, I'm gone.

Local DFW weather stating, possibly Cat 5, Tropical storm conditions in DFW. Could effect not only CO, but AA & WN as well both having Texas hubs

Sure not as helpful as you'd think they'd be here. I'm mean, jeez, there's a major hurricane heading toward Houston. You'd think they'd be thrilled to rebook you anywhere else.
