Define Riff-Raff?

Dear Colleagues:

I'm trying to catch up on the glossary of terms used in the threads and most I'm getting because of context. But what is "Riff-Raff"? Folks who are upgraded and are rude? How do we distinguish them from folks who buy the seat and are rude?

Negative. Folks who attain status via trips from personal funds and trashy fare buckets [L, T, S].
Long live the Riff-Raff! ^

Outside of FT, a variety of definitions, synonymous with words like proletarian and nincompoop.

there are several FT meanings of "Riff-Raff"
1) Riff Raff Plat/elites - elites(platinums) who earn their status via bottom of the barrell fare buckets(X,S, T, L). With extremely well-planned out runs, RR plat can be had for under $2000.
2) Riff-Raff pax - leisure travelers (see the show Airline)

pptp Jul 23, 2005 4:20 pm

I have no idea what pax pay for tickets, but I have learned not to judge people based on appearance, age, etc. Sometimes these are CO's top customers. I, however, NEVER want to see a guys feet or armpits on a flight.

I need you to start booking my flights, that's like 2.6 cents/mile. Hard to do if yoou ask me

entropy Jul 23, 2005 4:33 pm

my best this year is:
1.8c/EQM
and 0.6c / RM

channa can do better than I, however.

Syzygies Jul 23, 2005 5:37 pm

I made platinum at a rate of 5.1c/EQM, or roughly $4,000, all transcon. (That's still riff-raff.)

ani90 Jul 23, 2005 5:48 pm

Or maybe to those who actually pay for their FC seat, a riff-raff might be anyone sitting in FC who did not actually pay for the seat - i.e. most people on here by the look of it! :p

So how do you call a top Tier flier pay out of own pocket bu only F/A fare (occacional C if F not available) Raff-Riff???

J.Edward Jul 23, 2005 6:16 pm

There use to be a consistent loophole in CO's system. 5,244 EQMs which would yield 18,978 bonus miles to a Plat with the Chase double mile bonus (the extra 2K came from the co.com online booking bonus by making to tickets instead of one). $.0176 / EQM, $.0048 / bonus mile = Plat for only $1,320.

People posted this in the MR forum repeatedly and CO wised up and 'fixed' the problem. :( Moral of the story: if you don’t want to ruin a good deal -- don’t post it, PM it!

PS. channa was the one who showed me this

tincan Jul 23, 2005 6:35 pm

RIFF RAFF can be defined as some CO commuters.

I did EWR LAX this week and was in 8C. 3 CO Flight Attendants came in (orthopedic shoes and all) with two having 4 bags and 1 have five bags (not including purses). Little bit later in the flight I found out that they had just come in from HKG and was pissed that they couldnt find overhead space to stow their trunks. Short of demanding their bags be stowed in the midcabin closet- they did. Then about half way thru the flight I was awakened to a loud grunt. I thought - what the hell! The grunt was all three of them snoring louder than a jack hammer on the sidewalk. I though RIFF RAFF

entropy Jul 23, 2005 7:10 pm

But how many miles did you do at that? Enough for Plat?
Bargain basement (Riff raff) fares account for about 15% of my EQM
most my EQM come from going to TLV in BF (30k EQM a pop, and @ nominal cost of 2600 (8.6c/eqm)) but it paid BF.
so Plat = 2 RT + a little domestic flying.

Hm, may have to rethink this MR thing. Just turned down an extra 2,500 EQMs because it only yielded 3.5 c/EQM on top of a flight I was going to take anyway.

But I behave myself, don't fart, only have one carryon, and fill seats that would otherwise go empty (leisure travel - finally scored my first business travel in over a year).

And it's Dammit, Janet .....

Rff Raff = Opposite of people who are 2 paychecks away from losing their house and car anyway -and- who think the airlines owe them First Class seats for life. THey would also like the aircraft they fly on to be reserved for other business drones, sorry I mean travelers who look like them, speak the same language as them and bring aboard smaller carry on bags than them.

Long live the riff raff. They are much more interesting to sit next to anyway.

Don't recall the last time I had an interesting conversation in coach. Better yet, make that NEVER :td: . Seems that all the spinners have another seat, and the riff raff has the seat next to me unless I get the UG (I'm not riff-raff, just riff-raff Elite).

Had a few interesting conversations up front when the UG cleared, and quite frankly, except for the popcorn idiot, that was the best part of the UG. Well that, and the free drinks.

What movie was that?

Probably for all intents and purposes, too. ;)

As is spelling. :)

That would be the cult classic Rocky Horror Picture Show, Janet being then pretty much unknown Susan Sarandon. Words delivered by Brad IIRC.

hilarious

And maybe it's because I'm a great conversationalist, but I enjoy my conversations in coach. Thankfully, I'm always put next to decent people.

MgmtConsult1974 Jul 25, 2005 7:10 am

Riff-Raff: business travelers whose employers require them to book their airfare through the corporate travel agent (as opposed to those who are allowed to buy through CO.com) and receive 50% EQM, zero EQP, no 1,000 mile CO.com bonus, and are generally treated like trash by CO.

Two paychecks? Wouldn't that be considered a lot of savings compared to what most Americans have in the bank these days? :D
