Last time this happened to me I was SSSS'd. Luck of the draw I guess.

HMizzle Apr 7, 2005 6:21 pm

I'm new....so

What is ssss'ed?

wendyhamburger Apr 7, 2005 6:26 pm

when your security treatment is "enhanced"

the SSSS means you are singled out for a generally more vigorous security check... I've heard triggered by various criteria, including last-minute bookings, one-way trips, cash purchases, name on no-fly list, etc.

Sorry and best of luck!

climmy Apr 7, 2005 6:26 pm

It probably means SSSS'd

I've been locked out only 3 times...All SSSS'd. I guess they don't want you using correction fluid to blank it out :D . Am I dating myself by using the trade name "Liquid Paper" ?

For the previous poster, SSSS'd means a pre-selection for secondary TSA screening. It ususally involves an extra 5-15 minutes at screening, depending on your carry-on luggage situation.

Fortunately, one-way tickets don't cause the problems they used to, I've been able to do on-line check-in without getting SSSS'd on 6 one-way ticked flights on 3 airlines during the last month.

Last year I met a man who worked for a company that delivered trucks around the country, returning on one-way tickets of course, complained about always getting the SSSS treatment.

One way tickets can get SSSSed just like last minute ones...

Call Continental reservations and ask them to make sure your reservation is "in sync" or just to make sure there is nothing pending about your reservation, then try checkin in again...

Interesting you mention those reasons Wendy! I think I've told you I like paying for my trips in hard cold cash... yet the only times I've been SSSSed are when I pay with a CC (client's request) and fly out of LGA.

I have never been ssss'd on CO. Depending on the airline, you may see 1, 2, 3,or 4 ssssss's on the boarding pass that is issued. If I fly one way, I almost always receive a boarding pass with the extra security designation. They rip apart your luggage. In one case my carry-on tested positive for TNT. The security guy took down a full report on me. I asked him how could I test positive for TNT? He said there was probably some type of hand lotion on my bag.

The couple behind me with one son also had the sss boarding pass. They were flying one-way back to Florida because they had taken their other son to Minneapolis on a life flight small jet for complicated emergency surgery in Minneapolis. I think that it is a poor security system.

It's not a security system, it's a sham. Go have a look at the Travel safety/security forum.

How far in advance purchased?

Wondering how far in advance you purchased your one-ways. Recently Mr. hamburger went to Maine to deliver a boat back down to Florida. I bought him a one-way up a few days out - he got the SSSS. Due to sailing delays, he had to jump ship in Virginia and fly back - walkup one way + SSSS. He flew two different (non-CO) carriers. So - hmmm. Maybe my husband and the trucking guy have something in common that you don't? Dark hair and bushy eyebrows? Foreign accent? (He's French but poorly traveled folks cannot tell difference.) :D

ZFV and On-line Check-in

I just tried to check in on-line for ZFV-EWR-CDG, but it tells me on-line check-in isn't available for departures out of ZFV (Phila. 30th St. Station). I'm not CO elite, and I understand CO kiosks still don't handle international passengers. I guess this means I'm facing a huge line after getting out of the train. I was also curious to see that CO says I should arrive 2 1/2 hours early for an international flight out of EWR, but they sold me rail tickets that get me in only 2 hours ahead. And I have no idea whether I'm SSSSd (although that's sort of how it should be).

CO has now installed kiosks that do handle international passengers at some airports. I've used them in IAH (the new terminal E has them, and they had them a couple of months ago at terminal C, before E opened). I've also used them at FLL a couple of weeks ago, and MEX has them. Just make sure that you have a machine-readable passport.

I would suppose also EWR has them by now.

This is CO's inability to check you in for international flights on CO.COM. I don't understand why NWA and AC can check you in on international flights, but CO can't.

This may be similar to a situation I encountered last month. Never did understand the reason. You can read about it in this thread.
