HP Upgrades
How successful have you all been in upgrading on HP discounted tickets this year?
I am traveling from LAX to PHX. The discounted rates vary from $ 99 to $ 179 roundtrip(some of which are even refundable!). The Y fare is about $ 500 roundtrip.
Should I spring for the Y fare, just to guarantee my spot in FC? Or given the relative short duration of the flight, should I take advantage of the low fares, and try my upgrade luck at the gate?

It's your money, but on short flight(about 350 miles) I wouldn't pay the extra for a Y class seat.
As for upgrades, as a Onepass platinum I'm 100% on upgrades on HP.

I have historically had no problems upgrading on that segment. I would purchase the deepest discounted fare and take your chances. As has been mentioned the flight is not long enough to warrant going out of your way (money-wise) to get a seat up front. In F, it is strictly a beverage and smoked almonds flight.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Thanks Boomer and DSimon for your input. I think I'll go for the $179 V Class fare (wich is the refundable walk up fare, I believe).
As a Coach pax and Onepass Gold Elite, am I entitled to HP's FC check-in and pre boarding?

Yes and yes. And you can also use their nice clubs if you belong to the CO P-Club. As a CO Plat, I was nicely upgraded upon check-in 4 for 4 this year betw LAX and LAS. I could never obtain an advance u/g by calling CO or HP.....always said "full".
Buy the cheapest fare!
