Time Limit for return of ELTC's?

Could anyone please tell me if there is a time limit for the return of ELTC's (1998)in order to get the 500 miles per unused certificate.

Many thanks,
Nick

JAWS_II Feb 22, 1999 8:40 am

Nick,

Where did you hear about this?

JAWs

MileKing Feb 22, 1999 12:07 pm

You can return those for credit?? Since when? I'm Gold on CO and never heard of this. I hope this insn't true - I tossed about 8 into the garbage last night!

Merry Feb 22, 1999 1:20 pm

Perhaps it is just for European members, as US upgrades are not that much use??

The 1998 European Elite Members Guide (page 6):

"Redeem ELTC Certificates for Miles.

If you do not have the opportunity to use you ELTC certificates, you can return each certificate to you local OnePass Centre and ask that it be converted to 500 OnePass bonus miles."

Nick

JAWS_II Feb 22, 1999 9:04 pm

OK, I didn't receive my European Elite Guide last year. The only Elite Memebership Guide that I received was The Official TEXAS ELITE Membership Guide which allowed me to train in the 777 simulator twice a year.

NJDavid Feb 23, 1999 4:09 am

Oh, I see the confusion.

the US flyers are members of "Con-ti-NEN-tal" One Pass, but Merry and the rest of the folks in Europe belong to "Con-ti-nen-TAL" (accent grave) for the sophisticated European traveller.

I feel Soooooooooo discriminated against.

Merry Feb 23, 1999 4:20 am

I sent 12 ELTC's to OnePass on Sunday, and sure enough this morning my account has been credited with 6,000 bonus miles.

crju Feb 23, 1999 9:34 am

What about ELTS certificates? Are these things worthless? I have 12. Do you think I can get 500 miles each for these?

Merry Merry please advise,

crju

hhui Feb 23, 1999 9:47 am

gosh, where do you guys get all these ELTCs? I never got more than 8..

or do you just take ELTSs and paint them gold?

Merry Feb 23, 1999 9:51 am

crju: I have no idea, sorry.

I assumed (always a mistake when airlines are concerned) this applied across the whole OnePass programe.

Certainly in Europe you can return ELTS certificates (exactly the same as ELTC's) according to page 10 of the 1998 European Elite Members Guide.

You would need to check with your local OnePass Service Centre.

Please give it a try and let us know how you get on.
MF

NJDavid Feb 23, 1999 11:52 am

From One Pass:

"ELTCs are not accepted for flights over water, just for flights over land. Since most of the CO European customers fly over water (to & from US), the return of these ELTCs for bonus miles is an accommodation for them, as they have less ability to use them."

Whatever.....

traveltoomuch Feb 23, 1999 12:44 pm

NJDavid: Thanks for checking. I agree with your comment "whatever". That's the most bizarre excuse for NOT extending the offer to U.S. based flyers I've ever heard/read!

[This message has been edited by traveltoomuch (edited 02-23-99).]

Catman Feb 23, 1999 2:22 pm

I agree... this is among the dumbest rules I have ever hard (No offense Merry, but it seems unfair that you guys with all these ELTC's can't change them in for miles.)

Maybe some of you elites should write CO and mention that this is a bad policy for your favorite Airline.

U-A allows us to cash in unused upgrade certificates for miles. I can't see why CO can't extend the same off for you elites (the only condition they can attach is that the miles don't count for requalification!)

OMNI FOR JAWS: How do you go about training in a 777 simulator??? I'd love to do that sometime!!! (Send me the answer via e-mail. IN fact, if other airlines offer this send me via e-mail!)

And the guides I see read they are from New Jersey. HUUMM??? CATMAN

JAWS_II Feb 23, 1999 11:13 pm

Answer for Catman: VERY CAREFULLY!!!

Actually, Catman, this was a privilige granted only to citizens of CO's Hometown and expressly excluded anyone from Jerzee.

crju Feb 24, 1999 8:09 am

Merry,

Could you give me the link to page 10 of this guidebook? I will just print it out and attach my certificates and mail to OnePass.

Let me know,

crju

Merry Feb 24, 1999 9:57 am

crju: Sorry there isn't a link - that I know of - the guidebook is a book, made of paper, printed matter. The stuff before the web - OnePass obviously think we Europeans haven't grapsed the web yet (despite the fact we invented it). http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Nick

JAWS_II Feb 24, 1999 4:10 pm

OK Nick,

Ever heard of ARPANET? The only web invented across the pond was probably Charlotte's Web.

BlondeBomber Feb 24, 1999 4:31 pm

Merry/Rudi: I didn't think the Swiss were part of that "European" community. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

The first proposal for such a system (World Wide Web) was made at CERN (Geneva Switzerland) by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989, and further refined by him and Robert Cailliau in 1990. By the end of that year, prototype software for a basic system was already being demonstrated. To encourage the adoption of the system, it was essential to offer access to existing information without having to convert it to an unfamiliar format. This was done by providing an interface to the CERN Computer Centre's documentation and help service, and also to the familiar Usenet newsgroups. All this information immediately became accessible via a simple WWW browser, which could be run on any system. And the rest is history (not that long ago--how did we manage with just that paper stuff!)

Boomer Feb 24, 1999 7:07 pm

"ELTCs are not accepted for flights over water,"

I've used ELTC's on lots of flights, that went over water.

Most of my flights, go over water, like the southern approach to ewr, flies right over both the outerbridge and the goethals bridge. Even the idiots at the PA, dont build bridges over land, so that must be water under them there bridges. Whether the water is it fit for humans is subject to debate. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Merry Feb 25, 1999 2:13 am

Do not pass this point, those you do not want OMNI!

Tutt tutt tutt boys, no trying to re-write history please....

Tim Berners-Lee graduated from the Queen's College at Oxford University, England, 1976. He spent two years with Plessey Telecommunications Ltd a major UK Telecom equipment manufacturer, working on distributed transaction systems, message relay, and bar code technology.

In 1978 Tim left Plessey to join D.G Nash Ltd, where he wrote among other things typesetting software for intelligent printers, a multitasking operating system, and a generic macro expander.

A year and a half spent as an independent consultant included a six month stint as consultant software engineer at CERN, the European Particle Physics Laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland. Whilst there, he wrote for his own private use his first program for storing information including using random associations. Named "Enquire", and never published, this program formed the conceptual basis for the future development of the World Wide Web.

Now see what happens when two fine European countries - The UK and Switzerland - combine their efforts! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
MF

Now shall we talk about who invented the computer....?

onefreeman Feb 25, 1999 6:28 am

OMNI-thread posting:

It's probably unseemly for a guy who grew up in SoCal to defend a Texan but...

Jaws is right. The ability to actually run the internet (a WAN) was funded by US taxpayers and developed by ARPANET. I first logged on "the internet" in 1975 -- whilst Mr. Berners-Lee was still chasing tail (or whatever) at Queen's College (Catman -- isn't that in NYC??)...

Mr. Berners-Lee et al were instrumental in developing the tools to let the common man clog the bandwidths of the world and have so many wonderfully slow-loading pages full of ludicrous animations and graphics! Of course it also gave us FT and how could we possibly survive without that?! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Having said all that:

"Now see what happens when two fine European countries - The UK and Switzerland - combine their efforts!" Here here! We need lots more of that and a lot less of the garbage we see in so many parts of the world...

And with that, onefreeman exits stage left --

crju Feb 25, 1999 7:55 am

Sorry to be the guy that returns to the original subject but, crju enters stage right.

I packed up my 12-ELTS certificates today and mailed them to Continental (mailing cost 54 cents) referencing the page numbers you quoted.

Cross your fingers and I will post the result (if they reply).

See ya,

crju

crju: Nice recovery!

Let us know how you get on. (Are you a US or European - or somewhere else - member?)
MF

baobab Feb 25, 1999 2:42 pm

Ahem, Merry, my web-savvy friend... please note the little highlighted "INFO" link.

Mouse over to it, and click to find out more about crju.

Catman Feb 25, 1999 4:12 pm

Thank you Cruj for getting us back on topic! The cat Cops salute you.

OMNI for OneFreeman: Queens COllege is indeed in NYC> It' sa good liberal Arts school, part of the City University system. Several of my friends graduated from there.

Bab's: My crusty old comrade, I am well aware that crju is currently halled-up in the US, however, I didn't want to be so arrogant as to assume he was enrolled in the US scheme.

People move, global village etc etc you of all people should know that my little African Queen.
MF

crju Feb 26, 1999 6:47 am

To answer your question, I am US. Mother is of Scottish background and father is of Austrian background.

I travel to Europe ever year and spend about 2 weeks to a month (pending work commitments).

So far, I have lived in Mississippi, New York, Florida, California, and now Texas.

Currently debating on moving to New Zealand.

Thanks for the question,

crju

Old Gold Feb 26, 1999 8:55 am

I lost my last ELTC certificate when I "accidently" handed it in with a ticket booked in FC using a 10,000 mile one way reward. At least I still have the 10K certificate!

JAWS_II Feb 26, 1999 9:16 am

Merry, Don't go there! What about the ABACUS? Now, if you qualify with the descriptor, 'electronic', we have a contest.

Merry Feb 26, 1999 9:55 am

Jaws: I'm sorry but I forgot that the US history books differ from the rest of the world's! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

I think the best solution is that we let this lie until the party-in-paradise, when we can have a head-to-head debate on the history of the computer and internet.

Catman can of course adjudicate. Rudi can referee. Bab's can keep score - she is very good with maths.

Pberret can look at the discussion from a different angle and BlondeBomber can try and convince us Air Canada invented the computer and KatW can do whatever she likes!

What do you think? Shall I contact the committee or will you?
MF

JAWS_II Feb 26, 1999 10:11 am

Merry, I think you are correct. You can contact the committee, but I have one request: That Catman be delegated to serve the "pre-during-post-discussion" mai-tai's, pina coladas, MacAllan Scotch, your choice of excellent beer and ale, and my choice of Cubanos. Provided, of course, that Catman secures a "new" Hawaiian Shirt.

Merry Feb 26, 1999 10:51 am

Jaws: The new Hawaiian shirt is an excellent idea. I am a little concerned about the drinks though - Catman will need a supply of Pepsi and Sam Adams.
Nick

PS: I am very impressed by the was you have focused on Catman in you last post - thus ensuring you do not receive an 'Omni warning' from him (note how Catman never minds Omni when it is about him!! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif ).

JAWS_II Feb 26, 1999 11:47 am

Nick, Please excuse my use of Texan about the drinks. Those drinks are for you and I and to be served by Catman. The Cat will have to secure his own Pepsi and Sam Adams.

Catman Feb 26, 1999 1:40 pm

THIS IS CMDR CATCOP. THOSE LAST FEW POSTING MAY BE ABOUT MY BEST FRIEND CATMAN BUT GET BACK ON THE TOPIC OF ELTCS!!!

CATMAN SAYS IF YOU GUYS WANT HIM TO GET A NEW HAWAIANN SHIRT BUY ONE FOR HIM (PREFERTABLE ONE THAT TOM SELLECK WORE IN "MAGNUM P.I!")

CMDR CATCOP FOR..

Rudi Feb 26, 1999 1:59 pm

as I had no idea what ELTC's is/was, I didn't look at this topic, and missed the discussion about the CERN and MY COUNTRIE'S PART.

I know now the different OPINIONS/INTERPRETATIONS about the "invention" of the internet - but I still only have a small idea about ELTC's. I guess it is an upgrade voucher for use in the US only (as the 500 miles-vouchers with UA?: those were first also only returnable/changable into ff-miles for overseas members, but UA changed that US-member-"discriminating"-policy about 2-3 years ago).

Rudi Feb 26, 1999 2:08 pm

... and, yes BlondeBomber Switzerland is not (yet) part of the EC - we are not even a member of the UN (but we pay more per head to them then most other countries, if not all) - BUT AT LEAST ONE SWISS IS AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF THIS FLYERTALKBOARD.

Merry: I am looking forward for my "juge-arbitre"-role in boxing-matches and Internet-discussion-rounds and chocolate- and (smuggled) cuban-cigar-tastings and men's beauty-contest between JAWS and CatMan, etc. etc. etc. We Swiss know to play that referee-role very neutral and to our profit (we only give up our neutrality seconds before the definite winner is knwon - and we pretend afterwards that we were on his side from the start).

Catman Feb 26, 1999 4:04 pm

THANK YOU RUDI FOR AT LEAST STICKING TO THE TOPIC OF ELTC'S (which I too did not know or heard of before reading this board.)

OMNI: I"m being drafted for everything... I thought I was too old for combat! But I will say that everyone's a winner because we are all friends (I don't care if I win anything except Yaz winning the cat show this weekend!)

NOW GET BACK ON TOPIC OR SIR EDWIN LANDSEER WILL COME VISIT AND SCRATCH YOU!!!
