ewr/dps on hold....

I have the following on hold for an unbelievable $683! ^
9/30 co15 ewr/hnl (764)
10/6 co1 hnl/gum (767)
10/7 co900 gum/dps (738)
10/24 co901 dps/gum (738)
10/25 co2 gum/iah (767)
10/25 co48 iah/ewr (762)
I want to ticket asap since cx ended their deal of the month & this is a fare match, but I have a few questions.1)we really wanted the direct flt hnl/ewr but we arrive in hnl at 5:15pm & the direct flt leaves at 3:35pm so it would mean an overnight;my question is if we do this, will we have to handle our luggage? This is not an option with all our bali shopping :) 2)I have enough miles on nw to upgrade 1 way(If available);which would you choose?3)any seat recommendations? Thanks for any suggestions.

Is this on hold at CO.com?

channa Jun 8, 2004 1:34 pm

No hurry to ticket. When CO holds an itinerary, it's held til "midnight tomorrow" -- fare and all. So even if they pull the fare, you're ok til "midnight tomorrow." Just remember to call back and ticket.

Is a ticket like that upgradable?

samee Jun 8, 2004 1:53 pm

Thanks for the replies...I called the 800 # to book because the website wouldn't let me do the dates correctly on the return-going back a day due to the dateline.I did better by calling-the website fare was $708.54. :) She also said the res would be held til the 10th but I didn't know if the fare was guaranteed too.I didn't try to upgrade yet-but on another thread they said it was upgradable?

Viajero Joven Jun 8, 2004 4:39 pm

The fare is guaranteed if you don't make any changes....... changing to the HNL--EWR nonstop would constitute a change and trigger a reprice at current fares--- so decide which you're most likely to want, lock it in, then you have time to sit and decide.

As far as your questions, I would be inclined to upgrade westbound since many flights will be during waking hours, and I would prefer upgraded food/entertainment while I'm awake and bored. But this is considering I can fall asleep anywhere/anytime on a dime. :)

As far as the overnight bag check, I don't have direct experience.

1.) The problem with the time is regarding the outbound I believe, yet you are more concerned about the baggage on the return, right? If an overnight is also required on the retuen I think you need to re-check upon entry to the US. If so, you'll get you bags back in HNL on the return. Can anyone confirm?

You can avoid this on the return by going through NRT instead of HNL. I went to Bali on this routing recently. No stop-overs and the checked bags went all the way through on the return. I preferred the outbound stopover in NRT and the full BF service on the 777. I would recommend switching if possible. It's only a few hours longer. It's a no-brainer IMO if you are in BF.

2.) I would choose the return. Simiar service both ways on my journey. It's just that its easy to forget you are in coach when you have a Bali vacation AHEAD of you, not behind you.

3.) If you do end up going to NRT, I like the 2nd to last row on the high letter side in the 777 BF b/c of the coziness caused by the staff's sleeping curtains. On the 767 to GUM, I like the middle seat if traveling alone in BF. The 738 to/from Bali is a quiet night-time flight both ways. If empty, sleeping in an entire row in coach is a good way to go. I like the 2nd row in 1st on the 738.

Several questions,
1. How sore will my a** be from sitting on a plane in coach that long?
2. What's Bali like in Nov?
3. I can't tell how long a layover I have in Tokyo, never been there. Should I try to spend a day there? and if so how can I work that out?
4.See question 1
5. Is 3.5 days enough to appreciate Bali?

any and all input is welcome

Thanks

The fare is $599+ for M-Th, measured from the departure of each transpacific sector. It's $50 more for travel on other days, hence the fare difference.

1. pretty damn sore

2. Very warm and humid. Pack light. I usually slightly overdress (sportsjacket for biz casual occasions, suit and tie for jacket required, etc.) and I never got out of my bathing suit at the Four Seasons and Ritz.

3. The way you have your routing now, your stop-over would be in GUM. You should be able to change it so that you can stopover in NRT. This is true because you can go NRT-GUM-DPS all in the same day by catching the early 767 NRT-GUM. NRT is far more entertaining than GUM. Especially for a first time visitor to NRT.

4. see answer 1 :D

5. 3.5 days is fine for an Aussie who can always go back. 3.5 is a long trip for an American. But I guess that is what a mileage run is all about. Bali's cultural aspects arent what they used to be (or so I'm told..my only visit was in '03). It's all about very unique and beautiful resorts. Some are small and quaint. Some are big/US style. All of them are dirt cheap vs. the US for what you get. Let me know your budget and I will make some suggestions and/or refer you to some other boards.

stopover in HKG?

Does anyone know how to price in a stopover in HKG? I read the fare rules and it mentions it, but I just can't seem to get it to work. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

EWR-DPS over thanksgiving

Thanks for FT, I also booked this deal for $705. Leaving 11/19 from EWR (through IAH-HNL-GUM), returning 11/29/04 (DPS-GUM-HNL-IAH-EWR), can't wait!

dme Jun 15, 2004 7:16 pm

If you’ve booked your flight thru HNL and you are concerned about bags, you may wish to know that in HNL you will have to pick up your bags, clear customs and immigration with them and then recheck them.

DrivingRain Jun 15, 2004 7:36 pm

Last time I checked (11/03), it cant be done on CAL metal. There are no same day HKG-GUM-DPS itineraries, so you'd have a second stop-over in GUM.

It would be great if they changed the sked so it worked. EWR-HKG n/s & stopover, then HKG-GUM-DPS same day would be a very attractive routing.
