Remember, too, that CO uses a very optimistic operating philosophy, and as a result, there's not much slack or padding in CO's system. So, if there's a longer-than-normal flight time, CO is less likely to be able to absorb it.
From the current schedules: Code:
carrier | origin | destination | max | avg | min |
I've noticed a lot of CO's 737-900 westbound transcons have been diverting to Denver this week. Maybe this type isn't well suited for transcon flying? (The 737-800s haven't been diverting).

The difference amounts to 10 minutes eastbound and 10-20 minutes westbound. Note CO uses slower B73x equipment on many of their flights, while UA is all B752, which makes CO even more optimistic.
Wow...I hadn't COnsidered the slower CO equipment. That really COmpounds their :rolleyes:ptimism. |
Thanks to fantastic tailwinds in winter I've had a 5.5 hour EWR-AMS flight. Yes, 5.5 all-in (take off to touch down).
That same winter there were reports of 3.5 hour SEA-EWR flights. When I flew SEA-EWR it took 4 hours. Still fast :) Just last week I had a 6hr15min take off to touch down JFK-SEA flight (on DL, though). -RM |
DCA crosswinds
Landing at DCA on a RJ was quite a ride yesterday (02/19.) Not sure which runway it was but we flew along the potomac and then had to do a short bank to line up the runway. The wind was so strong that we could barely finish the bank so we had to wave off. I don't think we were much higher than 100-200 ft from the ground.
We came back around and it was like deja-vu but the pilot was able to get one wheel down and then the other and then it was done. But it was a pretty rough ride. I was watching other planes land from the PC and it was the same thing for almost all of the other planes. Apparently, Jetblue cancelled some of their flights that day from DCA. |

It's a global phenomenon. Thai's ultra-longhaul LAX-BKK flight has taken 18 hours in the air recently. It was 15 hours in August.
